    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Brake Upgrade Suggestions

Hi All,
building my GS1100G, 1983.
It has no brakes at the moment.

Can anyone suggest a brake kit that would suit? I'm going to be replacing the standard rims with some nicer ones....I'm thinking at this stage of getting an R1 brake kit, or an R6 brake kit with the discs of course.

OR if anyone here has successfully installed a brake kit to the GS1100 and can suggest something that would suit, I'd appreciate it.

Believe it or not, stock GS brakes work shockingly well with modern pads and braided brake lines. If you haven't gotten the brakes working right, you may be pleasantly surprised.


If you've done this and you still aren't happy, then if you search around, theres a way to make (or possibly buy, if they're still around) adapter plates that will allow you to mount up modern calipers. You still use your stock wheels.


But there's a bigger issue I see: if you're planning on upgrading the wheels, pray tell what are you going to do with the rear? There are no drop-in replacements for a phat tire on a shaftie rear wheel (believe me, this question has been asked over and over and over and over and over...). It is possible (but hellishly expensive) to have wheels widened, but there's little to no room in the swingarm for a wider tire than a 130/90-17. I believe a few folks have squeezed in 140/80 tires, but they do get pinched in a bit by the narrow rim.
