    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Final Drive Gear Ratio on Shaft Drive

I read somewhere that the later GS1100GK touring bikes had a different final drive ratio to earlier GS1100Gs.

Which part is it that changes the gear ratio? Is it in the rear hub? If I got a rear hub from a GK could I put it straight onto my G? I do a lot of highway driving and could do with a taller gear.

I believe that it is all of the '83 1100s, not just the GK.

It's not much of a change, they went from a 3.1 to a 2.9.

I think your 1100 (not sure what year you have) turns about the same engine speed as my son's 1000G, which would be about 4000 rpm at 70 mph. With the new final drive, that would change to 3740.

Without making some other changes that Suzuki included with the '83 bikes, you might be shooting yourself in the foot by lowering the engine speed. You might bring the speed down below where it makes enough power to maintain that speed easily. You might have to increase your throttle setting, which will more than offset any savings gained with the lower engine speed.

If you find an '83 final drive, it is a straight bolt-on.

When you say the "final drive"; is that the hub on the rear wheel? Is that where the ratio is altered? Do you know if you tell by looking at them?

Yes, final drive attached to the swingarm. You can not tell the difference visually.
 
OK so I have been experimenting with the one that is off my 1983 GS1100G.

In order for the part that attaches to the wheel to rotate one single rotation I needed to turn the part that would be attached to the shaft drive 2.9 turns. So it looks like I have the taller geared hub already.

If I had needed to turn the shaft drive 3.1 turns it would have been the lowered geared hub? This would require more revs to achieve the same number of rotations.

Is that correct?

Yep, that is all correct. That is also the first time you mentioned that you have an '83.
I mentioned in post #2 that I thought all the '83s had the taller ratio.

Do you have the Suzuki shop manual? Information on the gearing at various stages and various years is in it. If you don't have it, I would be willing to scan it and e-mail it to you. I can't remember for certain all the particulars, but I think the higher gearing came 84 and after. E-mail sent re: gillinghams
