If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Goop hand cleaner on an old neglected seat

Another "tip" from a newbie that may be old news to you.

The seat pan that came with the bike was really badly rusted, and I found another on ebay. However, I like the cover on the original seat better. Despite years of neglect outdoors, it has no cuts or tears. It was just dried out, faded, and the edges that need to be pliable to mount on to the new seat pan were very dirty, dry, and rigid.

I saw several posts on the forum recommending Back to Black which I already had lying around. It definitely helped bring the seat back to life, but the edges were still stiff, etc.

There was a link somewhere online recommending Goop hand cleaner on vinyl - a car restorer swore by it. Since I had a tube of Goop around, I thought what the heck. I lathered the seat up good with Goop and let it hang in the warmest room of the house for a few hours. Then I wiped it down with a wet rag to remove residual dirt and Goop. I can't believe the difference it made! I can't say its like new, but it seems close. It's pliable and looks nice!

Assuming I get everything in working order and keep this bike, I may re-shape the seat and lose most or all of the step, but this way I can try it out in its original form.

I'll keep GOOP in mind. Looks great.

I've been using Armor-All for years to keep the seat (& tires, etc.) black -- and provide UV protection. Works great, but it makes the seat as slippery as ICE!!!

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought armor-all on motorcycle tires was a big NO-NO.

It is.

Porque? I've been using it on all my tires -- MC & car -- for years.

You're pretty lucky. It's fine on car tires, but not on a motorcycle. Too easy for it to end up on the tread and/or rotor.

Anyway, the Goop trick for vinyl makes some sense. Among other things, it contains a bunch of lanolin along with solvents. Maybe the solvents help the lanolin get into the vinyl and soften things up.

Keep an eye on it and update the GSR Hive Mind after a few months or years!

That's really cool! The seat on my TC is rock hard, but not torn up. I was going to try Vaseline. This looks like it will work even better. Not sure if I'll be aloud to hang it in the shower. I'll probably leave it on overnight in the garage.

Yeah - I bet your garage is a lot warmer than mine at the moment! I did get a little puddle of melted goop underneath. If I did it over, I would put a takeout container or something underneath.

Avon skin so soft bath oil will soften old seats quite well, I have a 69 honda cb750, the seat was so hard if I pushed on a square section the entire section moved. I was worried it would crack. Now that I've oiled it up a few times it is soft and pliable and it's been 10 years. It also helps un-slick a seat that had armor all on it. It also repels mosquitos L0L!

As already mention Armor All makes the seat slippery. Does Goop do the same thing?
