A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1000 carb to air filter boots

Oh, that's an easy one!

Remove the air filter housing. Of course, if you're talking about an early model GS1000, you get to remove the carbs to get it out!

No easy way out. Pull carbs (lots of patience) then airbox to get to the rascals. The good news is the new ones being pliable will make install a lot easier.

Okay, first
Are you asking about a 78-79, an 80 E, or a G model?
They're all different, to some extent

It's real easy on a 78-79

Remove fuel tank
Remove side covers
Unbolt rear master cylinder reservoir and let it hang
Loosed throttle cables on carbs
Loosen all 8 screws on carb boots in/ex
Unbolt and unscrew air filter box. Pull it out
Unbolt the 2 bolts at the top of the air plenum. Pull off the blower hose
Pull the air plenum straight back off the carbs
Straddle the bike and rotate the back of the carbs up while pulling the carbs out of the intake boots. Emphasis on rotating the back up. If the air box boots block the way, try pulling up past them harder. If that doesn't work cut off chunks of those boots so the carbs can pass
Once the carbs are free, take them out on the throttle side and undo the cables.
The air plenum will now wiggle out. There is a metal ring inside the boots that locks them to the air plenum. Pry them out or cut the boots away until the boots and the rings are free of the plenum.
Install the new boots and rings. The rings can be tricky to install, be patient and use Amorall to lubricate.
Installation is the reverse, except for the plenum side.
Hook up the throttle cables and slide the carbs in, intake side down.
Using a long screwdriver, pry the airbox boots up to the top of the float bowls. Then, over the mouths of the carbs. You should be able to get the intake side into the intake boots.
Continue working across with the screwdriver, getting the airbox boots over the carbs. Slide the carbs into the airbox boots and tighten. Push into the intake boots and tighten
Push the plenum up and bolt to frame.
Finish the rest.

Ive done this many times in 48 years of ownership
