Hey OldSchoolGS with the gs750es, rear wheel question

I've got an '83 GS750ED that I'm doing a makeover on, rebuilt engine, new paint job, bracing the frame, got a '93 gsxr 1100 front end and works performance rear shock and want to mount up a >'98 katana rear wheel. You'd mentioned that the 93-97 cush drive hub was a better fit due to the 1" shorter profile, and that you also used a caliper from that year range.

The question that I had is what axle and spacers you used with this setup and if you've gotten around to the offset sprocket for the chain alignment? Also, does the stock rear brake master cylinder work with the katana caliper or will I also need to pick up a matching master cylinder?

My last question is not specific to the rear wheel but about the monoshock linkage. I want to replace all the bearings and bushes in the linkage and swingarm, but cant find a supplier. Anybody know of one that is reasonably priced?

Do you need to? I rebuilt my everything this summer and I only replaced bearings/bushings on the upper and lower shock ends. All of the roller bearings in the pivots ect were fine after cleaning and greasing. If you do need them check bikebandit.com or Ronayrers.com

in my GS400 manual, it says that replacing the swingarm bearings is a serious PITA, that requires special tools. I wouldn't worry about it

I would like to see what bracing you did on the frame. I have a 1984 GS750 that hopefully will be worked on this winter. I have the Katana wheels on mine and I did not change my rear master cylinder when I moved to the Katana caliper. It seems to be working just fine. The rear wheel spacers. I turned them myself.

Been out of town, sorry for the delay,

I used a combo of spacers from the '93 (3.5in rear) and 2001 (4.5in rear) Kat 750 rears. Axel is off the 2001- the cush drive is off the '93 - it was about an inch shorter so I used it to minimize chain offset.

Using 520 sprockets- offset countershaft- and chain to help with allignment. Everything appears to work and clearance looks OK using a 160 rear.

Rear caliper is off the '93.

Engine is apart so I have not been able to put everything together and fine tune. Project will probably be completed this winter now that I have another bike to ride. Let me know how your bike progresses.

Good Luck, Ed.

It takes a combo of parts to make it work. I used the caliper hanger off of a Kat 600 way back when I did mine. I think I used Kat spacers as well. For the bearing support inside the hub I used my stock GS piece with a short section of tubing the right diameter added to equal the length off the GSXR piece. This needs to be right to keep the bearings from getting in a bind. The GS bearing support for the cush drive will work in the GSXR wheel if I remember right. I ground down the caliper hanger a bit to get more clearance between the swingarm. I'm running a 520 conversion too. 16/42 on the sprockets will get you close to the same rpm/mph ratio as stock gearing on the stock wheel.

I got a '93 katana axle and spacers as well as '93 caliper off ebay a week ago and should be here anyday as well as the 2001 kat wheel that I got, so we'll see how things line up.

How much clearance do you guys have in the swingarm with the 160 tire on the 4.5 rim? by my rough measurements it seems that it should be like 3/8ths to 1/2 an inch on each side at the widest portion of the tire correct?

I modified one of the links in the full floater to increase my rear ride height by about 2.75 inches and have lost about 1.25 in the front with the GSXR1100 forks which effectively should put me with a rake of about 24.5 degrees and a trail of 3.75 which is about the mark I was aiming for with a little over an 1.5" better ground clearance than stock and effectively more than that since the parts that all scraped first before are rear of center.

The engine's top end has already been rebuilt and I'm just finishing replacing the stator this weekend with an electrex stator I bought a couple years ago when I first started this project. Cleaning a 22 year old gasket is a major pain :-s (any pointers welcome)

I have another gs750ed thats a runner that I'll be putting the engine into to break it in and get the kinks ironed out then swap to the new chassis once its completed.
