i have a 1981 750l with pods and no mufflers and am thinking of getting the dynojet kit. how hard to install parts and is there anything that does not come with the kit i should buy while the carbs are being worked on? i am very handy with cars, but this is the first bike i built. thanks.

I'm interested in this as well since i just got a gs750ex 1981 with an aftermarket exhaust (filter half of the airbox missing, currently won't idle) and will be installing k&k pods, when you do your's i'd love to get some pics, unless i do mine first, then i'll document it as well.

i'm planning to buy it from z1enterprises, but i also would like to know if i need to order anything else.
plus i'm in canada, hopefully it all goes smooth with customs

I just did one on my first bike, and I have no experience at all. If you have experience with cars, you will be just fine. Take a couple of pictures with your cellphone as you go along, they can be very useful when putting it back together. Most people will suggest cleaning your carbs with carb dip while doing this process. A very good idea.

BassCliff will be along with your welcome package very quickly, but he has the whole carb cleanup series on his website. VERY useful, with pictures.

The only thing that does not come with the kit is a jar of elbow grease.
Cleaning the carbs is also a good idea. Carb dip is $20 at your local autoparts. In the states, anyway.

What's the best way to drill out the slide? Do you need a drill press or can you free hand it? Does the slide assembly need to be dissassembled?

I have the dynojet kit but haven't gotten around to doing this yet.

You can free hand it quite easily. The slide lift holes run towards the center of the slide, at a slight angle, so be prepared for that. You need to disassemble the slides in order to drill, and in order to replace the needles with the DJ kit. Harbor Freight has a circlip plier set that should do the trick. Once you've done the first one, it's a snap.

How does the bike run, NOW?

Drill the slide with the bit in the DJ kit with a regular ole hand drill. Read the instructions.
Yes you have to take the slide apart. Again, read the instructions.

If you're gonna install a kit please dont do it without dipping(rebuilding) the carbs. You're wasting your time if you dont.

Remember
Large drill bit for the cap over the idle mixture screws
Small bit for the slide. As mentioned at a slight angle towards the center. Don't put alot of pressure on the drill and let the old hole be your guide.
Tap in the main air jet corrector (I do believe the 750 have this)
Install the clip one notch down towards the taper from the directions (richer)
Use the larger main jet first and adjust if too rich
It's always better to strart rich and work yourself to a nice tan plug.

Good to know, thanks.

The bike runs fine for the most part, just a little lean. Carbs were dipped and cleaned about 3 years ago when I got the thing back on the road. I just never got around to installing the jet kit or the o-rings from Robert Barr which I got after the bike was back on the road. Kids have been sucking up all my free time. As far as the instructions, they don't really state if the diaphrams need to be removed from the slides. I should have been more specific on my question.

Thanks Chef. Any recomendations for which jets to use on an otherwise stock '80 1100E with a K+N in the stock airbox and Vance and Hines 4-1? The kit comes with both stage 1+3 with two sets of jets for each stage. From the instructions it would look like I would want to use the DJ114's from the stage 1 kit.

Are you taling about removing the rubber? If so, no ya dont have to remove the rubber.
You do however have to take the slide apart to adjust/install the needle and to enlarge the hole.

Good to know, thanks.

I'd get a 120 Mikuni main with that setup. Use the DJ needle at the third from the bottom. Go up to the 47.5 on the pilot jet.
I never understood the little stage one DJ mains, I've never used them.

just want to ask this again before i order my parts today. if i am going to have someone rebuild the carbs and install the dynojet kit, everything i will need is in the dj kit already or will i need to order additional parts. i do have oem rebuild kits for the carbs i bought a while back also.

Are you sending them to me? :-\\\

Installation is easy. Very easy infact. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Now after you get it installed you'll have to tune your carbs to your build. Thats wherer the fun starts. DJ gives you some pretty close settings, but sometimes it works sometimes it dosent.

OK, that was what I was wondering about and what I was a little hesitant about.

Sweet. I remember converting the DJ numbers to Mikuni and they did seem small as I recall. Now, all I need is some parts and time.

I'll quit my hijacking now.
