light rust in the tank, what do you recommend

I thought my tank was pretty nasty but after actually taking everything off of it and looking in detail its not bad at all, just some rust under the cap more than aything. I tossed some nuts and bolts around in it and rinsed it twice with gas and got some fine dust out but no big chunks.

Any recommendations on what to use to rinse it out?

Use a product caled Wink (comes in a little brown bottle) and add that in with the nuts/bolts, without gas or watter added, and shake the snot out of it. Leave it set a while and repeat. Rince with water and then gas. :-\\\

Evaporust works well, along with aquarium rocks. Nuts and bolts are too large and just tumble over the rust instead of scrubbing it off.

I've have used Lysol toilet bowl cleaner. It's thick so it stays on the sides works good and cheap. Rinse with water dry with hair dryer. Rinse with a little gas and your off to the races.

Rinse with WD40 and then rubbing alcohol. The wd will flush any water out. The alcohol will remove the wd. If you use water, it may flash rust, especially if youve used nuts and bolts to knock rust off and exposed fresh metal..

Vinegar also works well and cheaply, judt let it soak a while, then WD and alchohol

Evapo-Rust. It won't harm your hands or the paint, yet does a fantastic job on rust. Amazing stuff.

I have used evapo rust and it is amazing stuff
it can even fix pliers or tools that are rusted to the point of immobility.

its too bad they cant make a gel
maybe jello and an agfternoon of experiments?

thanks guys. I found evapo-rust at the local tractor supply store to ill probobly go that route since its environmentally friendly and i have a pup running around getting into everything. That and it wont hurt paint.

yeah wink is dilute HF acid. great for toilets since HF looooves calcium (which builds up in toilets).

that said it is good for general oxidation too

I used the Por-15 tank cleaning kit and have been very happy with the results. I think it runs about $40-50?

Sup GS! Hey, I'm new here and a total layman when it comes to anything combustion engine! (i build custom furniture for Vail yuppies and work on PCs..) But, I had some sick build up in the fuel line i had just replaced as it was split. This lead me to search your trusty forums for a means to clean the tank.

I just wanted to give a big UPS to you guys and your wicked helpful pointers and a special PROPS to BassCliff for the walkthrough!

I got as much EvapoRust as i could find in my small hick town of choice and followed the steps to a tee. Even fixed my fuel gauge and polished my fuel valve!

As soon as i got it back on the road she was loud again, powerful, and much more responsive.

Anyway before i rattle off i just wanted to say thanks for this forum and all the wisdom and knowhow herein!

Next i'll be tackling new progressive springs in the forks w/ resealing and on to cleaning and resealing the rear dif (term?)...
This time i'll document with pictures since i'm gaining more confidence in working these babies!

I used Kreem and was extremely furstrated and ****ed afterwords.
All I did was get flash rust immediately afterwords, even after using the dehydrator product that sucks up moisture or water.

It ate the rust very well, but the typical kit just doesn't supply enough acid, and since your mixing it with water, you have to use more water than normal to cover the whole inside tank, and soon begins to slowly rust with the Kreem and water mixed in the tank!
Atleast it got rid of some large chunks of rust.

But I still have some flash rust going on, but haven't had time to clean the tank again so it's just getting burnt through the engine, and it's slowly going away.

I'm definetely trying a defferent product and REALLY been looking into electrolysis instead next time!
Im also definitely coating the inside tank with some WD-40 or PB Blaster so I don't get flash rust.

So lesson learned( even after doing a lot of research ), do everything you can to prevent flash rust, it's a real pain in the ass and then you have to do it all over because it will literally keep rusting before your eyes, faster than you can stop it! Unless you hurry and dry it or coat it with oil.
