Looking at a Yamaha Venture or a classic Honda Goldwing for 2 up touring

Here's an idea, throw a bike or two in the truck. This way Shan can share in the driving and you'll get there quicker and fresher.

PS: plus you won't be stuck riding some big turd touring bike.

This is a good idea....but if you do go old touring bike I wouldn't hesitate to say the '83 Venture is a great bike for under $1500. As far as 2 up, my wife always thought that it was the most comfy bike of the 45 bikes I've owned in the last decade or so. Better handling and more power than the GoldWings for cheap $. Here is my old '83 Venture.

I traded it even for an '86 Connie, which is one my least favorite bikes owned.

As you can see I used to ride both in the cold and snow.

Here's the Yammie with my old GS1100E and GS1100G back then. Notice that I replaced 3 of the clutch springs to tighten up things in 5th gear. The V4 did outmatch the old stock clutch springs. I may still have the 3 new/unused aftermarket clutch springs in the garage somewhere if you need. I had an extra set of blue side bags with keys that I never could give away so after 8 years of collecting dust I threw them out!!

I had a friend that would take his Yamaha Venture to the Drag Strip. What a hoot, he'd run down the strip with the stereo blaring! Everyone loved it! He was pretty good at it too.

Thanks for the input Steve. I knew you had Connie 1000 for we have slandered the bike together before. That was probably one of my least favorite bikes I've ever owned as well.

Good new about the Venture... I would likely ride it deep into the colder months as well.

I'll see what happens.

Hope things are well! FYI Tell Leigh that Shan wants to have her over and get some opinions on the house and catch-up. We should connect soon!

Best,

Those were pretty quick bikes-pretty solidly into the 12 second range if I recall.

Naked Wings are reasonably rare and, so, command pretty decent premiums over their dressed brothers.

GSRick has a Cavalcade. He should have some info.
Have you considered a GS GK, or are you looking for a non i4 bike?

That's clean but I'm not spending that much on a bike right now... Bit rich I'd say but I'm sure it's worth it to someone other then the seller.

Call him in late January after his Christmas bills start rolling in. :devilish:

What's the Story of the Cavalcade?
Here is one for $500:

Cavalcade came out in 86 I think. (GK was kinda the stop-gap offering untill then).
Has V-4 engine, that some folks say is difficult to work on, I dont specifically know what/why.
THat one listed there says "need clutch slave cylinder". I dont know where that is located to know if would require much engine work.
I see that one also has the windscreen cut down and has trunk removed and a few other 'custom' things.

If it was running and intact (including trunk), that would be one heck of a deal.

ANY V-4 bike is a pain to work on, some more than others. I have not worked on a Cavalcade, but don't see why it would be any different. I have had the dubious 'pleasure' of woring on a Yamaha Venture, Honda ST1300 and Honda Magna 1100. None of them is easy.

When the Cavalcade was brought out, it was running against the Venture 1300, Goldwing 1200, Voyager 1300, and Voyager 1200, battling it out for creature comforts. It seemed to lead the pack in virtually every area, but was also the most expensive, which is probably what killed it. In the one shown in your link, someone was probably trying to cash in on the current "bagger" fad, and removed one of the best parts of the bike, the trunk.
