DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I want to put a different tank on the 77 GS400... nothing wrong with the stocker but it's kind of boring and I want to cafe this bike... full frame off next winter.

I really like the look of the more angular GS450 tank... I think it's the 83 E? I have an oportunity to pick one up for $50 in good condition but I just want to ease my mond before I bring this thing up to Canada.

It LOOKS like it should bolt right on... same front and rear mounts... the petcock looks the same too... has anyone tried this combo? The only thing I am unsure of is the length of the backbone for these two bikes... still waiting on measurements from the 450 tank but curiosity has no patience :)

Any insight would be appreciated!

My understanding is that they they used that tank on the E model in '80-'81 in the US. Not sure about anywhere else.

Dan..
It should be a direct fit....only thing will be that you will see a lot more of the neck at the frame. You might have to re-route your wire harness and hide it a little better.

Good luck

I plan to eventually build a custom gas tank for my 550LX, if for no other reason that I despair of ever finding a fat gas tank like I want in the aftermarket.

With my Dual Headlight Conversion, I'll have ample reason to help cut the air around me by widening the tank in front of my knees. I'd also like to make it a little taller so I can install a stock filler neck and my original locking gas cap along the centerline, not offset to the right. I'd also like to bring it down a little to hug the frame better, even if I have to install a heat shield between it and the engine. Better contouring for my knees and inner thighs. I'm a fat woman. I demand my comfort where I can get it.

All in all, I'm hoping for a look that would fool a novice into thinking it's an OEM Suzuki part and making it look like it always belonged on this bike, but I want a capacity boost of over 100% to about 8 gallons. I'd like a range of about 400 miles. Yes, I'll prolly be adding a gel seat too. Iron butt's meant to be a figure of speech, not a literal description.
