    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

My first oil change isn't going to be cheap

Here is my shopping list. Anything I'm missing?

  • Oil Pan (15qt)
  • Oil Filter w/ O ring
  • 3 qts of 15w40 diesel engine oil
  • 20mm 6 pt 1/4in socket
  • Shop Rags
  • Transmission Cover Gasket
  • Simply Green degreaser/cleaner
  • nitrile gloves

I'm removing the transmission cover so I can clean the oil lens. I'm pretty sure it's grimed up and I want to make sure I don't run her low.

Many of these items obviously I wont have to buy every time. My shop isn't, yet, equipped. I'm about 99% sure that my drain plug is 20mm. My 19mm didnt fit and of course that's as large as I have.

The total comes to about $80. With the exception of the gasket (unless the local dealer has it in inventory) I can get all locally.
 
Once you have bought the tools, you have them. Next time it'll be cheaper. ;)
 
Q tip for the oil lens, if it's not gone yellow from heat and age, it will clean up nicely, mine did....

use old T shirts for shop rags
use soap and water to clean your hands, instead of the nitrile gloves

but those both only save you a few bucks, so you might as well buy them,,,I usually buy the nitrile gloves in bulk, box of 100, can last a very long time
 
1/4" drive socket is no good. You will need a 3/8" or 1/2" ratchet and socket to take the drain bolt out.

You will need 4 quarts of oil (one gallon).

Yea, I think it's just oil gunk, not yellowing. We'll see.

Yea, the box of 100 is $15 and they'll come in handy for lots of projects.

A 13/16" spark plug socket will work...most everyone has one of those.
Or any 13/16" socket or wrench...

Ah yes, the 1/2". I didnt change that on my list when I wrote it up.

As for 4 qts vs 3. The service manual said it would only need about 2.6L (which is still less than 3 qts). Is there something I'm missing?
 
are you taking into account that you are putting in a fresh oil filter as well it will require more oil....

check your manual once again

If you change the oil filter at the same time as the oil it will take about 3.5 quarts.
 
My service manual says:

Oil Change: 2.4L / 2.5qt
Filter Change: 2.6L / 2.7qt
Overhaul Engine: 2.7L / 2.9qt
 
You don't need the o ring at every change either unless it's leaking.

It comes with the filter anyway, so might as well change it out. Not sure when it was last changed by the PO, so I'm being careful.

A word of caution about the filter O-Ring. If the one you get in the mail is twisted and will not lay flat it will be a real bear to install in the filter cover. If you have this problem like I did, get some heavy duty grease, and use it to help the O-Ring stick to the cover.

Also be sure not to strip out the aluminum studs. They can be real pain. I've had my bike down for over a week to to complications and misfortunes due to an oil change gone terribly wrong. But now i know better... :rolleyes:

On my bike the oil plug is the same size socket as my spark plug socket. I think its a 21, but not sure off hand.

It's a simple operation, just take your time.

My spark plugs are 18mm. The oil plug definitely isn't 18mm. It's possible that it's not original. It wouldnt shock me.

It's the same on my bike too.
 
I usually buy the Rotella oil in the big jug (3.7 liter IIRC) from Auto Zone. It's a little cheaper that way.
 
So I stopped into ACE on the way back from lunch and they didn't even sell a 20mm socket. 19mm and then 21mm. A few of you mentioned 21mm. It's possible that my measurement was off.

I used an adjustable wrench, got it tight on the bolt, then measured that with a ruler (best I can do at this point). I measured 20mm, but it's very possible that it's 21mm. Anyone with a 650 who can confirm this? I don't doubt that the other engines very likely used the same size, but there is no telling.
