A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey everyone new member here. I'm fairly active in bmw forums for my car but wanted a cheaper way to get around while my car is down this summer.

My coworker was selling a 81 gs550l cheap with 7k miles so I went ahead picked it up. It ran but need a battery and was leaking fuel out of the boot on the carb on the left side of the bike. After my friend test drove it and realized it had no power and died as soon as he came to a stop we called his tech who's said he would clean/ repair the carbs, and do basic maintenance and inspection for 250$$

He is an auto tech by trade but to say the least, he was clueless on this bike so he charged me 30 bucks for ngk plugs oil and a filter, and said come get it out of his shop which I wasn't to happy about.

He did say I need a choke cable, fuel petcock, and he thinks the carbs have the wrong sized jets because they were mismatched but he also said he cleaned them.

When I got the bike back to work I started it idled fine for about 3 mins, gave a few revs and the it died and hasn't started since.

I took the petcock apart cleaned and inspected and then took the tank off, there is 2 hoses under the tank both on the petcock and a place for what look like a 3rd hose on the only other thing under the tank that has the wires attached, but there is nothing on it.

Anyways I reassembled and set it on prime for about a minute the switched to on and it almost started. It felt like it was on for less then a second. Tried a few more times then the cluster started to dim so I stopped.

Anyone have any ideas to help me get this thing started and running? Starter fluid? Carb rebuild? I am somewhat mechanically inclined but am 22 and nit to familiar with carbs. I think they may be flooded grom me trying to start it 15 times over the past 2 days but am just not sure.

I did loosen the float screws and they do all have fuel. Any help is greatly appreciated guys. I'm very excited to get this thing running and go for a cruise for the 1st time.

Thanks for reading, Dylan

Hi Dylan,

Welcome to the forum. You came to the right place.

For starters check the Newbie Mistakes thread linked in my signature for a list of things to get busy with. Then check this website for tons of useful links...http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

I wouldn't bother trying to run the bike until all the maintenance is up to date. This is not the thing most new riders want to hear but it's the truth.

Good luck.

Are you in luck? LOL, you're in OH..... GS central. More GS owners than any other place on this Earth. You've probably got a learned member right around the corner ready to help you.
