Pods and Stock Pipes...

So, after getting my bike ripped apart tonight to clean the carbs, I began to notice that my airbox is junk. The rubber parts are all ripped up and dry rotted. The plastic parts are cracked and broken. I don't imagine any amount of weather stripping will fix the issues that this box has.

So I bit the bullet and ordered up some pod filters for the bike. I've worked with pods on my other bike before, and I know they can be an absolute beast to get tuned correctly.

So I'm going to be running the pod filters on the bike, but for now I'll be sticking with the stock exhaust pipes. I really don't want to spend a couple hundred bucks for a pipe right now...I've already got too much money into this thing in the last two months!!

So, with that said, does anyone have any suggestions for WHAT SIZE JETS to START tuning with??

I know that for pods and a pipe I'd be looking at 127.5s to start with, then moving up or down from there. But with just the pods, am I going to want to jump that far up in size, or would I be better off just getting some 125s and trying it from there??

Any suggestions would be helpful!!!

Thanks.
Jeff

Jeff,

If you can manage to patch up the plastic bits I have a good useable set of rubber boots I can let go for not a lot :)
I replaced mine but they didn't really need it, I could see when I had the new ones that they were actually much better than I assumed they would be!

Without a DJ kit you could be creating a rod for your back here....

What Pods did you get? Cheapies or K&N?? That will affect the jets too.

Dan :)

I just went with some mid-range ones. They weren't as expensive as the K/N filters but they weren't only $25 for a set of 4. I've used the same ones on another older 600 with really good luck, so I'm not too worried about the quality of the filters.

But they ARE cheaper than the K/Ns.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy the DJ kit. I don't like the idea of drilling though.

What filters are they? Are they foam or what? Trying to get an idea of air flow. Got a link to them?

Probably not as much flow as the K&N's. You might be alright with 125's.

I have a set you can try somewhere, plus 122.5, 127.5 & 130's I think... from memory. You can leave me a deposit on them & try them out if you want, return what you don't use.

So do we think this is something that can be done without buying an entire jet kit??

I mean, obviously buying just the jets is going to be MUCH LESS money than buying the DJ kit. The kit is selling for $125 right now. But the jets, I'm sure, won't be nearly that much...hehehehe...

But the jet kit does come with the adjustable needle, and the tappy-dos that go into the air holey thingy.

I think you will probably mess around for a long time then end up getting the DJ kit anyway but you might be lucky....

The easiest way would be to go V&H (or Kerker or something off Ebay) with K&N's. Then you can pretty much guarantee the DJ kit will work. You're throwing in a lot of unknowns so good luck!

By the way.. Ape sell some K&N rip off's for about $60 that they say flow the same...

This is the cheapest place I found for a jet kit. http://www.cyclespot.com/ Also check Amazon & motorcycle accessory warehouse.

Might want to ditch that CycleSpot link Dan.

Hello CycleChat and CycleSpot Friends and Family,
It is with a heavy heart that we write this note to you all. As most of you know, CycleSpot has been closed since the end of September due to a family emergency. We have faced some very hard decisions during this time and many events that we would not wish upon anyone.
On September 19, 2008, Jim committed suicide. We will never fully understand why he made this decision. In the wake of this tragedy, we have had many difficult decisions to make. One of those was how to proceed with CycleSpot. We closed CycleSpot temporarily while we sorted through Jim’s affairs.
Unfortunately, we have concluded that we must close CycleSpot permanently. Without Jim’s expertise, CycleSpot cannot deliver the service and support its customers deserve.
As we have learned through these recent events, there are many blessings in tragedy if only we are willing and able to see them. So we would like to give to you, the CC community, the opportunity to continue this online family and the camaraderie that you, its members, have built. Markster and Hit Man will be given full and complete reins of CycleChat as soon as we are legally able to turn it over to them.
We wish each and every one of you, our friends, the best.
Sincerely,
Biker Babe, aka Dawn

NOTICE:
CycleSpot is in the process of winding up its business. Bankruptcy counsel has been retained, but, unfortunately, it has been determined that there are no funds available to pay CycleSpot’s creditors or to file a bankruptcy petition for CycleSpot. Written creditor inquiries are directed to the law firm of Gibson, Nakamura & Green, P.L.L.C., 2319 N. Tucson Blvd., Tucson, AZ, 85712. Telephone calls will not be accepted.

You get that message when you click on any of the links...that really sucks for their family.

I think you're right. I think the DJ kit is the right way for me to go.

The instructions tell you which jets to use for the Stage 3 kit if you're using stock pipes of aftermarket pipes.

So basically, it has the instructions for what to do when you are using pods with the stock exhaust, and then instructions for what do to when you are using pods with an aftermarket pipe.

It's designed for K&N's. They are normally lean on the needle. Everything else is about right. :)

Sorry for that downer on the cyclespot link - I had no idea. He used to have the cheapest Jet kits.... :( You think they'd make it obvious on the home page.

Sweet. So if they're lean on the needle, and those filters I got don't flow quite as well as the K/Ns, then I should be just about right.

I'll just go that way, do it like the instructions say, and call it good enough.

I've spent WAY too much time jetting bikes over the last 18 months...I did my Ninja about 25 times last summer, always chasing "Perfect" before I finally realized I wasn't going to get it perfect for anything other than the exact conditions I was working in. I gave up and just said "Good enough" and never had any issues with it at all. Go figure.

You can get needles out from the top without removing the rack. I can do it in 20mins now from park up to restart.....

I would start one notch richer than instructions (believe I'm two) & go with the smaller of the two larger DJ jets in the box (I'm on the bigger ones from memory).

Dan :)
