Project 85 GS1150EF project.... no start

Well the bike is coming along. I believe I've sorted most or all immediate issues. Could still use tires. Should have the touched up fairing parts back this coming week. I couldn't get those black inner fairing pieces to come back to life via polish etc so I hit them with a misting of rattle can paint. Turned out well. I put the front signals on and have taken it out a few times to get it through the gear box and get it into some higher revs. Two things have come up. Left hand signal switch is missing the little springs inside the assembly. Switch still works but its manual. I've tried to source out a donor switch and until I do, I'll live with it. Also the speedo isn't working. I disengaged the cable at the front wheel and put my cordless drill on it. It did spin and moved the speedo needle to the max the drill would turn. (I don't own a corded drill that would spin the cable faster and give me a more accurate idea) Can I deduce that the drive assembly be the culprit? If it was cable it would not move the needle at all no? Or because there is a finite speed to my drill maybe its not accurate? Any thoughts? TIA

Yes, probably the drive. Just make sure the cable where you connected the drill to still has its square end and did not break there. If you can safely raise the front wheel, spin it and see if the drive turns. Sometimes the cable doesn't go into the hole. I usually raise the wheel, catch a couple of threads on the coupling, then turn the wheel slowly until I feel the cable drop in.
I'm on my second speedo drive, and it's starting to make squeaky death sounds.

The drive can be disassembled a bit, but not completely. I have a thread on it, but I need to fix the pictures due to Photobucket. I'll look into it...

thanks Glen. when I suspected my switch wasn't operating correctly I did find the link (can't remember who posted it BassCliff? ) that had a great pictorial of the assembly teardown. So I knew to watch for the springs. I've had my left switch assembly apart (carefully...) and there were no springs at all. But I did not know it doesn't return to centre. Also my speedo cable has a slotted end not a block. This slotted end fits to the flat blade in the drive hub. Odd?

thanks for the thread link. You mention you did the refurb because of irregular sounds etc but did it still function? Or was it unfunctioning and then after you serviced it, it then worked? thanks again.

Pretty much finished. Another big GS back on the road.

What I've done to it thus far. Replaced fork seals and fluids, front brake pads, bled brakes, new chain and sprockets, new spark plugs, oil change and filter, replaced right side mirror, touched up inner fairing pieces, repaired left side panel, rerouted the wiring harness and corrected any mis-connections, rebuilt starter, installed rotor and starter clutch (still no idea why it was missing...), replaced petcock. Basically took most components off and cleaned them. Only thing I sent out was the re-painted for the red color only on the upper and lower fairing pieces. Could use tires but I'm running with the ones on there.
My own personal quick observations while riding? It actually feels smaller than it is (that stock handlebar placement give your hands a 'tucked in' position). You sit 'in it' as opposed to 'on it'. Need to get reacquainted with the steering characteristics on these older bikes at least at low speeds. But thats just me.

Thanks. Yes, $375 purchase price for the bike. New chain, sprockets, fork seals, used starter clutch and the seat moulding pieces plus some odds and ends...maybe another $400-450. Paint job I traded services for. So cash outlay has been minimal. They don't always work out this way as most of you know but pretty fulfilling when they do. There's still some work to do but for the most part finished. Now still debating on a 86 GS750ES. In Canada here it was already labeled on side panel GSX750ES, not sure about the States or whether it was offered in this form (700cc?) at this time. Thoughts?

Also to any EF owners in particular what did Suzuki use on the windscreen, third screw down from either edge? All the other screws thread into a wellnut in the black plastic inner fairing but these two holes have no wellnut, just a hole. The windscreen hole does line up with a hole in the inner fairing. But this inner fairing hole doesn't have the same appearance as other attachment points that contain the wellnuts. It appears that a screw or bolt goes through said hole and there should be a nut you thread on yourself. I will take a pic later today and post unless anyone's got a pic? TIA

There's supposed to be some sort of insert nut type of thing there. Its flanged on top and sits flush with the fairing and it's crimped on the inside to cause an interfere fit. And they fall out sometimes.

So it appears its the same as the other what I call wellnuts. Odd that I'm missing the same one on each side so I thought it might some different type of fastener. Thanks.
