Putting a GS1000 engine on my 850 Shafty

So I found a GS1000 engine in great condition, other than the crappy black spray paint job the PO put on it. I have scheduled vapor blasting of the engine to get the paint off and return it to a decent finish on the aluminum, chose vapor over soda blasting, according to the service company, they do full engines quite a bit and have never had an intrusion issue. Carb rebuild/clean and she should be ready for the swap Mikuni BS carbs on this one. Took measurements of the exhaust and the 850 Delkevic exhaust should fit right in with some new crush ring gaskets. Right now, the paint is so thick on the JIS screws I can't even remove them. I am on hold until I get the paint off. I hope to have everything done before Christmas/New Years. I pulled the valve cover, intake and exhaust off for a quick look at the top, really clean, no evidence of valve seal leaking, valves seem to be holding tight on seats, no air blow by, valves have minimal build up, wasn't expecting it. Compression all 4 over 170, motor turns over easy. Can't wait to get her started up. I decided if I do have to rebuild the engine after getting her back and running, I am going to do the big bore kit. I will polish up the exhaust side and clean up the top end in the process ( not the intake side ). Anyone else have the Wiseco kit? how is it working for you? Not sure if I want the 1085 or the 1100 kit... Will also be putting a Dynojet kit on the carbs and going with APE pods. Since there is nothing wrong with my recently rebuilt 850 engine, I am going to prep it for storage once I am done, kind of my security blanket if something goes wrong with the 1000.

the whole...or what was left of the GS1000 shafty... cost me $300, couldn't pass this one up.

If the engine is that tight, why bother with a big bore kit? Seems like a lot of money & work for the gain on a shafty.

Does your 850 have the electronic ignition advance on the crank or in the ignitor? If it's on the crank, you should be good. If it's late enough in the '82 production run to have it in the ignitor, you will need to find an ignitor appropriate for the 1000 engine.

The only other issue would be the driveshaft yoke. Some time during the '82 model year, the 850 got a different (slightly larger) bolt pattern where the driveshaft bolts onto the secondary drive's output flange. This might have co-incided with the ignition change, I don't know for sure.

.

I'll have to check, but I might have a swing arm, shaft and final drive from an '82 1100GL. Well I think it is. Someone put an 850 engine in a parts bike I got cheap in Tenn., so they might have swapped both the engine and final drive. IDK

Rick, both are shafts

i got a 80% bike, both shafty, mine is a Z model, bolts right up no issues. Either way, I have the shaft drive off the 1000. And the ignition system. Both have the auto advance on the crank. Either way I have all I need for the swap.

Only if there is something wrong with engine and I do need to take it apart.

You bought the 1000gl from my buddy, did he ever contact you about the title? Also i have a video of that bike running last year after i pulled it out of a barn. Bike ran strong

Yes, they did, but this discussion started with shaft-driven bikes, then mentioned electronic ignition, so I tossed in the tidbit about the '79 850 being the only shafty with points.

.

Sweet.
Im just glad that i didn't waste my time saving that bike from the barn. It was going to the scrap yard just like my red 1000g was. Actually it came from the same place.. i just did a 10 minute hack job and wired up the ignition to hear it run. Was gonna built that motor for my old bike. But my buddy leon wanted it so he gave me a months free rent for it. Then he traded it for a turbo to the guy that the op bought it from.

He gave me the wrong title, he gave me an 850 title, I still have the one he gave me. No matter, I only bought it for the engine. A buddy of mine is going to take the frame and customize it when I?m done. What was the mileage, looking at the top end I?m going to guess not much mileage.

I have extra parts to convert it if I needed to.

Could he have layered anymore black spray paint on the engine lol.
