So I found a GS1000 engine in great condition, other than the crappy black spray paint job the PO put on it. I have scheduled vapor blasting of the engine to get the paint off and return it to a decent finish on the aluminum, chose vapor over soda blasting, according to the service company, they do full engines quite a bit and have never had an intrusion issue. Carb rebuild/clean and she should be ready for the swap Mikuni BS carbs on this one. Took measurements of the exhaust and the 850 Delkevic exhaust should fit right in with some new crush ring gaskets. Right now, the paint is so thick on the JIS screws I can't even remove them. I am on hold until I get the paint off. I hope to have everything done before Christmas/New Years. I pulled the valve cover, intake and exhaust off for a quick look at the top, really clean, no evidence of valve seal leaking, valves seem to be holding tight on seats, no air blow by, valves have minimal build up, wasn't expecting it. Compression all 4 over 170, motor turns over easy. Can't wait to get her started up. I decided if I do have to rebuild the engine after getting her back and running, I am going to do the big bore kit. I will polish up the exhaust side and clean up the top end in the process ( not the intake side ). Anyone else have the Wiseco kit? how is it working for you? Not sure if I want the 1085 or the 1100 kit... Will also be putting a Dynojet kit on the carbs and going with APE pods. Since there is nothing wrong with my recently rebuilt 850 engine, I am going to prep it for storage once I am done, kind of my security blanket if something goes wrong with the 1000.
the whole...or what was left of the GS1000 shafty... cost me $300, couldn't pass this one up.
