Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I'm going to be replacing the grips on my bike, and already have the left side off to switch out the clutch perch, so I figured I would go ahead and get new grips. I also thought, why don't I just upgrade to the R1 throttle as well so I don't have to put the grip on twice? But is this upgrade worth the extra money? I don't want to do the $1 mod because I'm picky about cheap fixes. The throttle I would want is a 2000-2004 R1 throttle tube correct? How easy is this to switch out? Thanks!

Yes, the Yamaha R1 throttle, not a KAW :P Any people with it have an input?

([FONT=&quot]Throttle tube for a 2004 R1 (4YR-26240-02-00) )

it will give you half the twist to get to WOT

your bike is going to be a monster once done....

installed

no negative issues thus far

very easy to do, take off the old and put on the new, grip on the left only, tube and grip and the right, use some hairspray when installing new grips, this will glue em in place once it dries

I didn't use the cheap fix, I needed new grips anyways.......

The quick, and cheap fix worked well enough for me, and 2 years down the road has not caused any issues...

How about low cost, high value mods that work just fine? It's your money and your bike, but I think it is foolish to spend more just to achieve the same thing in the end.

It's actually not as good, as you can't adjust the throttle pull. You are stuck with whatever the R1 engineers decided on.

But if spending $30 instead of 30 cents makes you feel better go for it.

I guess maybe I should have put a R1 TT on my Kymco

It looks like the current tube has some sort of adhesive for the old grip on it, how hard are old grips to get off? Just cut it off, and clean the tube for re-application? Also, can you see the pvc pipe when looking at it, or is it hidden?

Also, when I was reading the $1 mod thread, it said that it would be 20% harder to twist, which I don't want. I want a nice, easy, and smooth twist, like a brand new bike has. I love when a throttle is quick, easier on the wrist.

can of WD40 and stick the straw it comes with between the rubber and the bar/tube give it a good spray and in a few spots and it will loosen it, should be able to slide off, or use an air compressor and put air between the rubber and bar/tube, or just cut them off, and install new grip, new tube/grip, don't forget the hairspray

Unlike the $1 mod, I understand that they have a R1 throttle tube does defies the laws of physics (smooth and silky); those smart Yamaha engineers.

I didn't really notice any change in the action, apart from not having to reposition my hand to get to WOT.

I just cut the old grips off and clean off whatever gunk is under them. The PVC pipe is inside the throttle housing where the cables terminate.

As I said, it's your bike and your money. Look at it this way, if you try the PVC sleeve mod and you don't like it then you are only out a couple of $$ and a few minutes time. If you really can't stand the idea, then you can still go buy an R1 throttle and install it instead. My bet is once you put the PVC sleeve in you will never think about it again.

I hate to break this to you but there is no way to not increase the force required if you reduce the travel. It is a simple lever and that is how physics works. The only reason a new bike has an easy twist is that it also has nice new cables and everything else that work perfectly. Replace the old, worn out cables on your GS and it will feel exactly the same.

So it's a tradeoff, really. Either less to WOT using more force, or reposition my wrist to get to WOT. Is the force that much noticeable? Maybe invest in a new cable as well?

I didn't notice any more force required, maybe my wrists are stronger...LOL
