A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

After fighting, disassembling and reassembling the front master cylinder 3 times to get it to work.. I'm tapping out. Im just going to replace it altogether.. Can anyone recommend and perhaps shoot me a link for a decent quality but reasonably priced master cylinder for a 78 gs550 with a brake switch?

Not 100% sure of the size of your original, but assuming it is single disc and 14mm, this will do:

It has a brake switch included (you will need to re-do the wiring / connectors though).

Yep, any single brake UJM type bike will basically do it. They all seem to be 14mm. Kawasaki KLR, Ninja 250 etc. Far more cost effective and less hassle than rebuilding to buy one being parted on Ebay

Agreed, I've got some new universal brake/clutch lever combo for $45 (delivered) through ebay, works a treat. It just doesn't look too original (as the reservoir is separate).

Loads of styles to choose from.

I would also suggest a used OEM master. I'm afraid to buy a Chinese unit and never be able to find rebuild kit in the future.

The one I bought came with a spare piston assembly for a future rebuild, the whole shebang was still cheaper than an OEM MC rebuild kit alone would cost.

Used the chinese models exactly as shown above. Never had any issues.

Yep, I bought a Chinese MC from fleaBay and it came with a spare lever and rebuild kit.

Surprisingly nice quality, and worked great.

However, the reach to the lever was different than the original, and it drove me bonkers. Eventually I found a source for the little window in the original, rebuilt it with a new OEM kit and a new OEM lever just because, and reinstalled it.

I ended up grabbing a aftermarket master cylinder for mine too, the only problem with it was that I had to find a Honda banjo bolt as the thread pitch was different than the Suzuki.
