Tank liner removal

Hope this is the right place since it pertains to the tank.. The Kreem sight says to fill the tanks half full with either MEK or acetone and agitate periodically. Let sit for 24 hrs. Are there any other chemicals that will dissolve the stuff faster and are less expensive than buying 2 1/2 gallons of the other stuff??

I have to imagine "The Works", would eat just about anything. Burned a hole in my concrete floor.

I went to Lowe's and bought the "Kleen strip" K-3 paint stripper. Pour that into the tank and add a package of aquarium rocks from wal-mart and you should be good to go.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fact that I learned this from Mr. Nessism.
I left the combination of paint stripper and rocks in my tank for several days and would just pick it up every chance I got to shake the **** out of it.
If you do a search on this process, you will find Nessism's recomended procedure. Very helpful.
Good luck.

Is it just rust that needs to be cleared out? (Still new to all this so forgive me if there is something else in there that needs to be cleaned up) I stumbled on this stuff and it sounds pretty amazing to me. http://www.metalrescue.com/home.aspx $25 for a gallon and only eats rust.

I used it on my rusty nasty tank and used baking soda to neutralize any leftover acid. No leaks to speak of.

The issue with the tank isnt rust...its removing the old Kreem tank liner. How long is th recommanded soak time for The Works??

Boil it out using a caustic solution (lye) ? I'm sure they could, but so could you.

I've never researched it.

I suspect you mix lye into water, put the tank into the solution and boil it. be careful with the lye solution and your skin.

Imho that tank is still too rusty to use. Still lots of rust in there that can flake off and clog your carbs.

There isnt any pictures of MY tank posted... That other tank pictured is someone elses. I want to get the coating out so i can redo the inside after some dent removal and another derusting if theres anything found once i get the old liner out.

Chuck..I realize that is not your tank. My only point was that the tank that the member posted is still too rusty to use in my opinion.

To remove Kreem coating your best bet is soaking the tank in acetone or paint stripper and using the rocks. If you are not worried about the paint you could take it to a radiator shop and have them remove the coating. My only concern would be why they used Kreem in the first place. If it was used to seal holes in the tank then removing the coating will cause the tank to leak. Once you remove the coating you will know pretty quickly if the tank leaks or not.

Its all gonna be repainted, so thats not an issue. And i am aware of the possible holes. Thats the thing about buying and its been coated and you dont have a clear answer as to "why"..I was on the Kreem website and they claim you can reapply over the existing liner if needed. I just really need to be 100% sure every aspect and detail has been fully dealt with before its painted... One little mistake in prep and the gas will eventually ruin the new paint if it leaks thru..

I would get rid of the kreem all together. Best to have a tank with no liner it. Try the acetone and aquarium rocks. If you really pressed for time or don't feel like fooling with the acetone, take it to a radiator shop and have them clean it out.

On a '78 GS1000 fuel tank that's easier said than done. it's hard to find one that's not rusty inside. I suspect it's because of the metal they used to make them.

I used paint thinner and expansion plugs.
Let it soak, periodically turning for about a week.
No more liner..
