All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

With all the people who have saved money, sometimes a lot of money, and saved time (how much is your time worth?) because of this site, you would think there would be more than 14 members contributing this year. :?
Even with a surplus in contributions, people should show their appreciation and send a few dollars. Just had to speak up for what good it might do. :)

Frank, you should make it possible for contributers to send you a paypal, I've been going to send money but checks and mail are so old fashioned I keep puting it off.

Okay, you two, and anyone else who hasn't gotten around to it.

Click on this link. When the page come up print it out. Take the paper and put it where you keep all of your monthly bills waiting to be paid--water, electric, insurance, etc. You have now been invoiced. The next time you pay your bills, pay this one.

I guarantee you any money you put into GS Resources will be a hundred times better investment than any stock tip you will ever get.

Good tip Don. No doubt on the later part either!

Frank when someone pays is there some way to set up an autoresponse so they can be PM'd a year later when their contribution expires. I contributed last year and to be honest can't remember when. Good thing I saw this thread. Anyway there'll be a cheque and mail. Also big thank you for all the work the staff puts in. This is a great site.

Frank says your supporter status ends at the end of each year, regardless of what time of year you contributed. It's easier that way.

I lapsed

Anyway some of our senior members, have never sent a penny :?:

Maybe they can't remember to contribute at the same time that they remember who or where they are.

:D

Whenever I do the Balance Sheet I never even notice that you folks may have questions attached. Duh... So here are some of the answers to your questions.

Frank, you should make it possible for contributers to send you a paypal, I've been going to send money but checks and mail are so old fashioned I keep puting it off.

We looked at Paypal but they have the troubling habit of locking accounts if someone who paid someone else has a dispute. Since I didn't want Paypal locking banking accounts that they don't own, we weren't willing to go there. Remember, even though Paypal operates like a bank, from a legal standpoint they aren't a bank, therefore you don't have the same legal protections. See http://www.paypalsucks.com/ for more info.

I really don't want to be a nag on this issue so we don't bother sending out reminders. We have enough money in the coffers to keep this site running for the next 6 years so there is no need to feel obligated to contribute every year. If you want to, then fine, but you don't have to. Feel free to lay back...

I know I did that the first year we took contributions just so I wouldn't get overwhelmed with everything. I have been changing people's forum status on the anniversary date however. If your staus changes to Past Site Supporter, then you know that a year or more has laspsed since your last contribution (no guilt trip intended  )

My anniversary always happens around november something, so I look like I don't contribute on the current balance sheet until it's almost over.

I only sent in $2 us money. Can you make a new category called super slight supporter????

Though the balance sheet goes from January 1st to December 31st, I change the status on your avatar on the anniversary of your payment, plus/minus a month or so depending on how busy I am.

I don't know, that's a whole lot of work to do for $2...

Raising Cash

Raising Cash

It is a basic tenant of business that if you want to make money you have to give the consumer what they want at a price they are willing to pay. Since this site is not really a business it gives the consumer what it wants, for free. There is no incentive for them to contribute. Only the few who really grasp and appreciate the concept of what this site does for them are willing to support it financially. In order to get the bottom line a little fatter you have got offer the unenlightened consumer something extra in addition to what they get for free, at a price they are willing to pay. Other sites offer their members certain privileges that are received only after they become contributing members. News letters, tech articles, and various other club stuff. I also think that there is some type of advertisement type of arrangement between parts suppliers and the websites. I think that well established, reliable businesses are allowed space, or web access, to offer their wares on the site in exchange for fees. Commercials so to speak. If you really want to increase the bottom line you have got to find out what the consumer wants and what they are willing to pay for it. Each of us uses this site for our own personal reasons. I think that if we put our heads together we can come up with premiums that would induce more users to become members. Unfortunately as you become more business like in your approach there will be a corresponding increase in the workload for those who run the site. There will probably be a need for members to step up and contribute more than just their membership fees for the good of the site. Any way you slice it, to get more money it is going to take more work.

As an opening for discussion, what would you be willing to pay extra for on this site?

A "short" payment, eh?

I think to be politically correct that would be "attitudinally challenged".

I know this discussion has been covered before and opinions of where people think the GSR should go are as varied as the motorcycles we all ride. Personally I like it the way it is ....it seems to work. As a person who does computer tech support and some marketing, I see far too many websites that have lost their focus in the pursuit of fortune and fame. I know there are lots of ways to commerialise (is that a real word?) a site without having all the banners and pop-ups, but that is not what usually happens when corporate sponsors want their way with you. I can take a break during the day, come here and not have advertisers in my face wanting my money. It?s great to have a site like the GSR that is truly just for the enthusiasts. The site does not seem to have any financial issues at present so why the need for more money? Bigger is not always better, unless of course it?s a GS. If the site needs more money I?d be more than willing to increase the amount I send each year to keep it basically the way it is. The only thing I would like to see on the site right now would be more of the component specific tech articles. Perhaps step-by-step articles on fixing a rusted gas tank, R/R conversions (I think there?s one in the works), or chassis/frame overhaul. These would have to be contributed by the members as Frank and crew have done more than enough getting the site to where it is now.

Well Frank, looks like you should have enough left over to be able to attend our Rally's next year. :D :D

Pleeeeeeaaaaaaasssssseeeeeeee, ya just gotta. :? :D
