    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Thread size and pitch of '81 GS750 swing arm bolt?

Does anyone know? Nut is no good...will order a new one I suppose. I picked up a 12mm x 1.5 pitch die to repair the first few threads of the bolt but not sure if that's the correct pitch...definitely not 1.75 pitch. Also, I see the nut on partzilla (bolt is obsolete). Any other recommendations for place to buy parts. I saw some used bolts and nuts on eBay if all else fails.

12mm fasteners on a GS are normally 1.25mm pitch.
 
You will likely have better luck cleaning up the threads on the bolt with a metric thread file -- it's too easy to get a large fine pitch die cross-threaded and make a real mess.

Do you have a thread file? Sometimes careful use of one can restore the threads enough to use the right die, unless the bolt (or axle) is severely 'mushroomed'. Also handy for determining thread pitch-

Can't believe i made it this far in life without using a thread file. So i watched a youtube video and now i am armed with more knowledge. I may even have a thread file (although probably not metric)...I never really looked closely at it so i assumed it was a broaching tool of some sort. Anyway, i ordered the nut cuz it was FUBAR, the thread on the bolt doesn't look too messed up but if the nut has any resistance going on i will fix the thread with a thread file.

Good way to start the day with a little enlightenment...thanks!
 
Look what I found in the broach tool box!...now to figure out what pitch the bolt is.

Geez, I don't even have a broach box...

Anyhoo, the 1.5 or 1.25 showing on the file will be it. I think for 14mm it'll be 1.5, but you'll be able to tell by seeing which thread file teeth mate up.
 
Haha, someone thought those were broaches. Good find!��

Also, if you have a Broach box.I think you'll be able to figure out what thread pitch you have...

Ok... I'll start there...I probably have a thread gauge (or two)....i'll look in the dial indicator box!
