I'm going to need some new rubber on my GS before fall sets in. Any suggestions as to what is a good value out there? 450-17, 350-19.

thanks, Pat

I just mounted a set of Avon road riders on my 850. 130/90X17 rear 110/90X19 front. They seem nice, I'm not sure of the mileage I'll get out of them. $215 for the set from competition accessories. .

The Avons are great. Personally, I think they steer a little better with 1 120/90-17, but many tires are not available in that size. Those Avons are.

Front on a GS850 should be 100/90-19. It's often listed with the rear tires, since it's a design that can be used on either end.

Agreed on the Avon AM26 RoadRiders.

I have mounted Michelin Commander II tires on my '83 GS850L.

They are great - handle well - stick solidly - turn easy - and are supposed to have good longevity ..

I am unsure if they come in the size you need...

www.JakeWilson.com is a good place to look ...

Hey, you're supposed to be out there flogging them mercilessly so you can report back to the GSR Hive Mind. GET BACK OUT THERE AND WEAR THOSE TIRES OUT! :D

'bwringer' has posted some excellent reviews/comparisons on tires. The Avons are the best bang for the buck, but if you're looking for a cheaper great tire the Shinko 230's are great, but in the end the Avon's get longer life and beat the Shinko's in cost per mile. I've got a set of Shinko's on my 1000G, great tires, great grip in dry and wet.

I have Metzelers on mine just had a new front fitted today, no complaints at all.

Best cost per mile I have experienced is the Michelin Pilot Active. I got better than 14k out of the last set and just over 2k on the current ones. They look new.

Good luck

Not all of these tires are even available for our skinny tire old GS wheels. Especially the rear ones.

Yes sir !

I'm running Continental TKV 11 & 12. They say they are designed for older bikes. No complaints after 3000 miles and seem to be holding up well. Most of the little rubber spikes have fallen off the rear though.:)

I just bought a set of Avon Roadrider's at http://4wheelonline.com, for a good deal. First time to try Avon since I'm a fan of Michelin and Metzeler. So far I have no complaints. Handling feels great and I feel confident on the road with their grip.

I have the Shinko 230's on the rear of both of my bikes and am getting ready to replace the front on my 1000G. They're V rated which adds a little more margin of safety over the H rated tires IMHO. So far I'm happy with the ride. Picked up the rear tire for $72 delivered from www.motorcycle-superstore.com. They were running a Memorial Day special on free shipping. Tires arrived 4 days after I ordered them. They offer free shipping on all orders over $89 so you would easily meet that with a front and rear tire combo. Front Shinko 230 in 110/90V-19 is currently $59.

Just yesterday replaced my GS850G 30+ year old Dunlop Touring Elite's with Avon AM26 Roadriders, got them on-line and had them mounted at a local shop (the two-man shop where both of the guys are older than the bike, not the multi-brand dealer where the kids are not). Wow! 20 mile test ride around town and the difference is amazing. The Dunlops still had ok tread, but were starting to show small cracks at the base of the tread blocks. Also, could feel every crack in the road, so the rubber was pretty hard. The Roadriders are very smooth, look great, and I think will preform well once they get scuffed up a bit more...

As an aside, I did a search on 'grease' on these threads, and found some good advice (I hope!) on what to use on the rear wheel drive spline. There was plenty of blackish goo on the spline when I took it apart, but I hate to not clean it up and put new goo on it while its apart. The consensus seems to be Honda Moly 60 Paste, so I went searching. None of the local autoparts or big box stores had it, so I went to the dealer and one of the kids said 'that sounds familiar', and found it on a hook behind the counter. Bless those kids! Package was pretty dusty, so they don't sell much of it (and a tube is a lifetime supply, as noted).

And that's all I'm goin' to say about that! (F. Gump)

Cheers!

Riding round on 30+ yrs old rubber  Your lucky your still here to talk about it
