    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Upper fork tree misaligned, adjustable, fixable?

Bummer, my 1100G fell over and partly off trailer on a left turn. Front end was tied down and when the bike fell over the opposing forces wrenched the forks and tree.
Looks like the fork tubes are straight, it's the steering heads that took the stress, the upper and lower stems are misaligned.
Haven't taken it off yet.
Wondering if this is adjustable, or were the parts damaged?

When my 1000g hit a deer the tree got bent. Messed up steering real bad. Unfixable.
 
Just me, but before deciding your triple is FUBAR. I'd get it on the center stand. Loosen everything from the stem collar nut, fork holding bolts in the triples, on down through to the (fork brace if there is one) fender, axle nut and axle holder bolts under the forks, and see if you can set things straight. I would think that you could see once everything is loose, whether something is out of kilter. If you get it straight, tighten in reverse order, from the bottom up.
 
Hard to imagine just falling over could strip those splines. You say you can see the upper and lower are out of line, how much out? Waaaay more common for forks just tweaked in clamps and not tracking straight. In that case just unsnug lower pinch bolts, twist forks back straight, and re tighten.... Those splines got to be pretty tough.
 
Splines? There aren't any splines locating the top triple. There's just a taper and the nut. It can rotate relative to the rest of the triple and steering stem.

The machined surfaces where the forks slide in can indeed end up twisted and ruined, but that takes a fair amount of violence.

If the fork tubes are still straight, 99% of the time in oopsies like you mentioned, you can put it on the centerstand (and support the front end so it doesn't fall through when you loosen everything else) loosen the pinch bolts, loosen or remove the fender, (maybe the wheel, too) loosen the nut on top of the upper triple, loosen the axle, then wiggle everything back into alignment.

Why I'm asking, because I never had this problem. Never taken this assembly apart before.
Old eyes, looked like splines in diagram. I don't see any splines in ebay samples.
 
Ah, first time for everything!

I bet it's fine; just loosen the stuff mentioned and wiggle it back into alignment. Done it many times.

Assuming it's all good, maybe install upgraded tapered steering stem bearings.

Been so long, He said splines and I knew I'd never heard of them stripped. We just loosened the clamps and twisted the forks back straight. Glad you found out before taking it all apart.... Really simple and cheap...congrats,
 
bwringer​ posted it best, Just loosening everything up could cause them to go back to their original spot. Some wiggling, slightly loose, but loose, is a good idea. If they can't straighten out like that, being cast aluminum, you can't force it back, it will crack, if not now, possibly in the future, in any event, I wouldn't trust it. If it does go back to straight without forcing anything, just a loose and wiggle, you're good to go. ;)
