A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Valve Shimming

Okay I would like to start off by saying that I do have Steve's valve adjustment sheet, however, there is a problem with the document thinking it is password protected so I can't use it at the moment. With that aside, lets talk shims. I checked my clearances today and here are the results:

Cylinder #; Clearance; Old Shim; New shim

Exhaust

#1 >.04mm; 2.8; 2.7
#2 .05mm; didn't pull
#3 >.04mm; 2.7; 2.65
#4 >.04mm; 2.75; 2.7

Intake

#1 .08mm; didn't pull
#2 >.04mm; 2.7; 2.65
#3 >.04mm; 2.65; 2.6
#4 .05mm; didn't pull

So if my measurements are correct, then I need to trade in a 2.8 and 2.7 for a 2.6 and 2.65 and swap my other shims around. This is my first time doing an adjustment so I just wanted to double check with the more knowledgeable folks on this forum.

If I'm reading this right it doesn't look like you need to do anything. .03-.08 are the tolerances right? I'm in the middle of doing this myself. I hope mine are this good.

Those valves tighter than .04 mm may need to move down two sizes. I'd pull that 2.65 out of 3I and try it in the other locations that are tight so you can get a proper measurement on the sizes you need. As for 3I, when you order shims make sure you have a 2.55 as well as what ever else you need after the measurement. Oh, and don't turn the engine with any shims missing.

good luck

Nessism, good idea with using the thin shim to check the others. Sometimes obvious solutions aren't so obvious.

This is nitpicky but doesn't the symbol you used denote "More Than" .04mm. I think < denotes "Less Than" but I could be wrong.

When you put the new shims in be sure to put them in with the numbers facing the valve..keeps the numbers from being worn off by the cams..little diddy that Rustybronco shared with me ..

Likewise, I think the tolerances are fine and no shimming is required

The document is password protected, but only for the areas that you are not supposed to be bothering.

I answered your PM this morning and just sent you an e-mail.

Keep me informed. :o
