What's the best way to fix a stripped shock stud?

One of the rear shock studs has pretty much all the threads stripped off... Didn't see this untill I removed the shock - the nut was tight, but essentially just "jammed" on.

Any suggestions how to fix this without welding on another stud? Re-thread the shank with a smaller size?

A size smaller would be fine.

The threads don't really have much stress on them, so one size smaller should be OK, just don't cut into the shoulder portion that the shock sits on.

I bought a GS550 from a kid who only had experience working on American cars, so he forced on a pair of ASE chrome acorn bolts, WTF???
The threads were tore up, but after cleaning them with a die, they seemed to hold the torque.
Maybe you should try cleaning them with a die and see how that works.

OK, filed down the offending stud to remove the stripped threads, cut new 3/8-16 threads using the cheap die set I had from Harbor Freight, new 3/8-16 chrome acorn nut from the local hardware store & I'm back in business!!
