A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello all, new to the forum.
I recently purchased a slightly modified 1980 GS850L and added finishing touches to make it a proper Cafe Racer.
I'm looking forward to absorbing as much knowledge as possible. I'm absolutely loving this bike.
Thanks in advance for any advice I may receive.
Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike.
Welcome. I'm the guy that invited you over from the Triumph forum. I'll get you started with a pic of your bike.

Welcome Mike, good to have you... Was wondering about a shaft dr. "L" model cafe' bike??? Now Congrats, Rich's pictures explained it.

Welcome Mike. I have a 1980 GS850GL mostly stock. I'm not generally a fan of cafe style bikes. But this one I like, well done!

Wow! You certainly squeezed all the "L" out of that bike.

Well done, sir, and welcome to the site. Now, if only something could be done about that shaft...

Sweet build! What fork gaiters are those? I got a pair that doesn't quite fit right on my '79 750, and am having a hard time finding a replacement set.

Welcome to the site, Mike.
Nice looking bike.
Are you happy with the RFY shocks? Heard good and bad things about them.

Honestly, they're installed for asthetic purposes. They work okay, but I'll probably upgrade. I'd recommend spending the extra on better quality.

I haven't owned a shaft driven bike since my 84 Honda Nighthawk S.
Honestly, for the purpose of the bike, I can't say I mind.
This is my putt around town/ride to work bike.
Nearly zero maintenance, I'm okay with that.

Thanks for your help and recommendation to the site.
By the way, that GS you have is quite the looker!

G'Day Mike and welcome to the forum, from Melbourne Australia.

Sweet lookin' 850 you have there.

Those RFY shocks are know for being shipped without much oil in them & there are some other weaknesses. The "piggyback" is usually just a fake. They aren't all the same even though they look the same....

They are just a cheap shock made to look fancy. I ran some for a few weeks on the 1000. They weren't terrible. I got them at source (in China) so they were relatively unkown then but shortly after they appeared on every retro-mod in the land!

There is a few guys that will do some work on them for you if they are still going but for my money if I wanted something that looked like that I'd get some YSS units.
