New Vietnamese seat with pictures

Doing a refresh on a 1980 GS550e and the original seat pan was bent in a way that made closure awkward/ill-fitting etc… and also needing a seat for a 550 project, was in the market for a nice original seat and to move old seat to project bike.

Ebay and local searches were coming up unsatisfactorily so, decided to roll the dice on a new reproduction seat from an ebay vendor in Vietnam. Chose a earlier style 550 seat as an aesthetic choice because I preferred the smoother lines of the earlier seats but, believe other year styles are available.

It was a bit of a wait but, that was expected & the vendor kept me afoot of the shipping progress and was very pleasant. Packaging was sufficient and the seat arrived in perfect condition. Zero complaints.

The seat: the pan seams to be a type of automotive grade ABS, very sturdy, and the entire seat is significantly lighter than an o.e.m. seat. Surprisingly, the fitment was excellent! Better than any experience with any used seat I have tried on a multitude of bikes in the past. Did have to add about 1/8” steel shims to correct it for my specific bike but, that is entirely expected and the final fitment is exceptional. (may later add another thin set of washers to fine tune)
Also test fit it on my ‘78 550e project bike and again, fantastic fit.

Here are some photos. (Please excuse the rest of the bike and surrounding environment)

Notes: While the fitment is great, the foam is very different, quite firm, not the stock plushness one would expect from a regular seat at all. For me this isn’t an issue as this bike is more of a commuter/fun bite than a long touring machine. I have a daily GS1100g for that. So, if you plan to spent long hours in the saddle or must have plushness, you may want to consider hunting for an original seat.

Anyway, just wanted to post this so folks could see & hear what my experience was before sending $280 off to Vietnam. My experience was unexpectedly good and hope it helps someone considering these seats as an option.

Pretty dang nice looking bike you've got there scratch. Thanks for this thread, great info. I've read about these seats 2 or 3 times and wondered about them. Their ads seemed good but no info from anybody that had one, I's skeptical.

Years ago I sent my ratty GS1000S seat cover to Bangkok to be used as a pattern for a new seat cover. They made my cover for free because I provided the template. Great quality. I know they have made many, many covers since at very reasonable prices. I would be surprised to learn they didn't have one for your model. Pit Replica was the name of the company...I forget the name of the woman in charge,,,,,very helppful though.

Ive been thinking of getting a 1000 seat. But with all this tarriff BS im also warry about the overall cost. May i ask what was the final cost for this seat???

Thanks, it's been garage kept for it's whole life so she's not to bad... was also wary but, with the lack of alternatives I decided to roll the dice. Figured there were others in the same boat.

With tax $261.08 all in door to door… $75 of that was shipping the seller was https://www.ebay.com/str/daytrader07 I don’t know this seller or have any affiliation but, do plan on giving them a good review. One of the reasons I pulled the trigger was worries of possible future tariffs.

I like the look of the seat.
What's "a bit of a wait"? Four weeks or so?

the seat actually looks fantastic... I pulled up to my girl's place yesterday to pick her up for and evening ride and she wondered what is different... she asked "did you wash it?" lol....
Aug 27 ordered and at my door Sept 23… Not bad at all really.

Additional notes: Did about 50 miles on it yesterday and got used to the firmness right away... It's defiantly a little narrower than the stock 1980 seat but, I felt like this was an advantage as I was able to "hug" the bike with my legs a bit in the turny stuff... don't t know if it is narrower than a stock '77 seat as I have never had one... Also at 6'1" I was able to sit back a bit further making the stock handlebars less awkward. (I find the turn in angle a little tough on my wrists with long arms). Being able to sit back a little was a really nice benefit I hadn't expected reminding me of riding my friend's 425 in High school lol... Plus with a passenger I wasn't nudged forward as much compared to the stock 1980 seat.

Forgot to mention it did come with the strap, I just didn't install it, I've never found use for them.

Two thoughts, handlebars appx. half as tall as those OEM would probably be more comfortable for you, the rider needs to be slightly leaning into the wind. Always wondered why Suzuki made their bars to have most riders sitting straight up. My "80" GS1000G had the softest, most comfortable, bike seat I've ridden on FOR SHORT RIDES. Longer rides It seemed the foam had compressed till I felt I was sitting on the pan.

I've had 550's with other bars and I'd have to agree with you... this is my first experience with stock bars that I remember and they take a little getting used to... The harder seat, after a couple of commutes & some miles I'm preferring it.

I got a seat for my '73 CB750 from Vietnam, very firm, but I don't mind that. The pan was perfect, as was the vinyl and foam.

For my GSs, I have gone with Pit Replica, and they are solid. How can $60 get you a better seat cover than stock? Well, prices will go up soon, I'm sure. This is a dystopian world we are living in.

As for contrast, I got a seat for my Norton, made in England, for $350 (now $500 plus thanks to tariffs grrr). What a hunk of garbage. Way too soft, thin vinyl. Pit Replica says they will make a cover fif you send a request, but I'm guessing it's Japanese bikes only, not crusty old obsolete Nortons. Damn.

If you send Pit a cover to copy they give you one free regardless of brand. I would send TC an email first though. He used my 78 1000 E and C seats to get them in the mix

I've read that much of the seat foam is hard styrofoam. A guy on the SHOC4 Honda site bought one and then put a red Yamiya foam in it. He was pretty surprised to find hard foam when he took it apart. My 70 CB750 Vietnam seat is also hard.
It looks awesome though.

I was impressed with mine that I got for my '73, the pan was perfect, fit right on with original hardware. It was firm but not uncomfortably so. For $200 I was pleased with it. Yamiya stuff is the best but $$$.

I can't speak for anyone else but, I have about 300 miles on mine so far and I prefer it to the older soft seat... defiantly not styrofoam, just harder upholstery foam than the plush stock stuff.
