Hello,

I'm new here and have found a lot of good information. Great site!

I searched and couldn't find this information so if someone knows where it is please let me know.

I have a 1982 GS750E and took the carbs off to clean them up. It was pretty dirty so I took out the main jets, mixture screw (small needle on end), and one other smaller (I assume pilot). I cleaned them and then put them back in tight. Is the mixture screw the only one that doesn't get put back in tight? And how many turns out are a good starting point for the mixture screw?

I cleaned up the floats, bowls and shot carb cleaner anywhere I saw an opening. Is there anything else you suggest?

Thanks!

Please don't take this the wrong way but we see 5.8 newbies per week around here that don't take the time to do a proper carb rebuild and then they have to take the carbs back off and redo the job again...and again, until they do it right.

I suggest a hard stop on your rebuild and order a set of O-rings from cycleorings.com. Next, go to check out the carb rebuild series here... http://www.thegsresources.com/gs_carbrebuild.htm

Get yourself a can of carb dip and get busy. Short cuts are long cuts when it comes to this kind of stuff so please do yourself a favor and do the job ONE time instead of several.

BTW, set the pilot screws to 2.5 turns and then tune from there.

C'mon ED, go easy on him, He's a NEWBIE.

Although everyting you say is absolutely correct as usual.

Do as ED says and you can't go far wrong.

Definitely not taken the wrong way, that is great advise. I will get the o-rings ordered and do it right the first time. The last thing I want to do is tear it all apart again.

Thanks guys!

Ed,
Do you have that message copied on your harddrive for these occasions....if not you should.

Better yet, what we should do is make it some kind of initiation for newbies. They should have to read the carb series and Stator papers and answer some skill testing questions before being allowed to ask questions.

In fairness, the info is not readily apparent and maybe it should be made more obvious.

Anyway, welcome aboard Rider and don't let us put you off;)

cheers,
Spyug

I was a little surprised by this, though:

How could you do any kind of a search about "carb cleaning" and NOT come up with pages and pages of threads on what to do? :-k

Maybe the search function has been used so much it's broken?

:D

Thanks for the kind comment steve-o... I'll make sure to look over every topic ever entered before I ask another stupid question.

I searched and found tons of stuff on carbs, just not the specific thing I was looking for. I'm glad I didn't find it though or I would have not done it right the first time.

O-rings are ordered, thanks Nessism.

Hey, I just realized that nobody has answered your first question yet.
Is the mixture screw the only one that doesn't get put back in tight? And how many turns out are a good starting point for the mixture screw?

You are correct, everything gets installed snugly, except the mixture screw.

How many turns out to start? 2.5 has been suggested, and it's a good start. I used to recommend 2, but have had problems trying to start a bike with freshly-rebuilt carbs until I turned the screws out some more. 2.5 turns might have done it, but I now suggest 3 as a starting point. Once the bike is running, you will need to tweak the screws for proper mixture, but they will start easier if they are too rich than if they are too lean.

Oh, and it wasn't a "stupid question", it just surprised me that you said you searched and couldn't find anything on the topic.

I dont see anywhere in this thread of great advise mention of intake seals?

One of those "while you're there" things.

The '82 750 doesn't have intake boot O-rings so no need.

Thanks Nessism, Steve and Octain. I'll let you guys know when I get the o-rings and have a chance to get her cleaned up and back together.
