A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

All this noise about noise got me listening -- GS850GL sounds

I have noticed a recent change of sound -- I think --
There seems to be a clicking or something that is new to my ear-
I do not know where to start or if this is even a real thing or me being overly worrisome.
Take a listen and offer your opinons

1983 GS850GL
Is about 1000 miles short of the next valve adjustment (4000 mile intervals)
Oil change due at the same time (3000-4000 miles interval)
My typical ride is about 30 minutes long at avg 45 mph commuting to work or home
The bike seems to run fine - pulls decent - delivers good fuel economy -

IDK -- What do you think ?

First I would like to say that I have what is know here as "industrial noise imperment " poor hearing on some levels, I have listened to your video with headphones and I did not hear anything that would concern me if that's any help.

When you are done with your valve check, don't forget the carb sync. That is about the only possible "noise" I heard.

.

Did you ever find the cause of the noise? I'm experiencing the same problem.

Eliminating the noise was a process but I will give you the high points --

Valves adjusted properly (helped some)
Carb synch (helped a little)

EXHAUST Gaskets -- I tore off the entire exhaust and replaced all the 'connectors' that join the various pipes -
Headers to h-box / h-box to pipes --

THIS is what really made a difference -- mostly it was exhaust leak(s) noise .

I also plugged the end of the pipes where a previous owner had drilled it out looking for more sound - which caused a poor exhaust flow -
which caused bad running -- etc. etc. -- I found some self tapping very short screws that fit the holes and just screwed them in -- worked a treat ;)

Now she runs great - sounds good - and delivers power and fuel economy better than before

Bingo.
I suspect that 90% of worrisome mechanical noises heard on GSs (especially faired ones ) are nothing more than exhaust leaks. Those pesky little leaks sound for all the world like a wrist pin worn out or piston slap or even cam noise, all the noises that come with currency notes attached.
Oftentimes a twist of a socket on the header nuts is all that's needed.
