A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Bicycling from CA. to MI. to pick up my 1982' GS450T then drive it back to CA.

Good to hear you resolved your problems.
Had spare R/R (thanks to GSR member) in addition the replacment one.
How much down time was that....?

Sounds like making progress fairly well.

Go GO Go. But do stop for rests. If get too tired is then too difficult to recover.

I think I jinxed you asking about the r/r. Glad it got you back on the road.

That oversize r/r is performing real good Matt, sure glad I was carrying it on the trailer in a box along with a few other parts I bought from Dan. I lost power to the battery right in front of the Legion hall (American Legion)in Rock Springs,Wyoming at 10:30 pm Thursday evening.
I camped-out on their property and in the morning the maintenance guy drove me from place to place in that city, nobody had anything or cared I was stranded, even a few dealerships.
Thanks again Matt !

Dave,it was 24hrs. extra time.
The other thing is the drive chain,it's Toast!
I'm lubing the crap out of it every chance I get and hoping for the best. I will put an o-ring 530 chain on it next. I have a new oem Suzuki front C/S sprocket with me now and sent a new rear from Ebay back to my apartment which is waiting for me. I waited until sundown yesterday to ride any further as my face is real burned, riding West into the sun,I'm at a McDonald's in West Wendover,NV. Waiting to drive in the cool of the evening ! I will get back for my Monday appointment at the dentist.

Bill sent me some more pictures, about 2 hours ago today (Sunday).

All he said was "Roadside service at an o'rieleys in Elko NV."
Did not say anything about the nature of the "service".

I wanted to smooth-out how the bike was running,it felt a lot less powerful.I checked all the standard stuff:carb slides for holes in the diaphragms, clogged fuel filter, rust in the carburetor Jets, etc.
I found a pair of cracked plug caps(Duhhh !!!)Man, that's usually the first thing I replacea along with the plugs.. I screwed up on that AND not replacing the drive chain.
There are no motorcycle parts to be had here in Elko on Sunday.I may have located 2 used ones after looking all day. I am determined to make it back on Monday for my dental appointment at noontime so I will drive through the night and make it.
Thank you very much Dave for posting these pics,I appreciate it. I'm going to learn how to post pics from my smart phone when I get back.

Just get a pair of used or new plug wires, remove the boots and end connectors from them and re-crimp them in place of your old plug caps. Easy peasy. 30 minutes and you are back on the road.

Dale,
Do you mean automobile plug wires?

I found a pair of nice plug caps that a guy gave to me, but it took me all day to track down someone who cared enough to 'Go the Distance' !, they came off of a separate pair of burned up pressure washers, they had Honda engines in them,5K.i'm back on the road tonight at 10 p.m. ! ! Pacific time and going to ride all the way, keep going with cups of coffee to make my dental appointment tomorrow.

Yes sir, automotive plug wires.

The 5K plug caps that are on the bike are just there for electrostatic noise suppression. It would be no different than replacing the little resistor inside the caps with a piece of brass rod.

Dave, I sent Bill a couple of text messages shortly after he posted this and no response as of yet.

I just arrived in California, climbed the big hills on 80W and still a few more. I carefully limped into Reno today from Lovelock at 45 mph with a steady hand on the throttle to go get a brand new chain,a 90 mile in.
That chain was extremely worn out,i didn't flip the sprockets over, even though I wanted to there wasn't time ,I was working outside their shop.

I arrived at my intended destination of Winters,California last night and the GS ran excellent the entire way out here. The bike really surprised me on how durable it is.
I towed the 4x8' trailer with motorcycle and lots of other stuff on it up many a road and the little engine just kept on pulling. Great bike.

I arrived ...................... ...

Congrats. Thanks for update.

Yah, no major engine failure (rod thru crankcase or anything). Your failures/troubles enroute where rectifyer/regulator, sparkplug caps, and drive chain.

Sounds like you did a lot, and had a lot of folks help you out, In Detroit and along the way.

.

I can only imagine the comments and conversations you had on your trip... Glad you made it👍

The total experience has been a BLAST !
I'm glad I replaced the chain, finally, someone had replaced both sprockets with new ones but they couldn't get the chain off because it didn't have a master link.
