Bike won't start/idle

Ok, this bike is new to me. I bought it as a project bike, its an 82 gs1100gk. when i took the carbs apart there was stuff stripped out and jets clogged and everything else, so i took em to a shop and they rebuilt and dipped em. supposedly they have it set up so i just put em on and the bike will start. I have checked my spark, it seems like im getting fuel and there is compression.... i am lost, i put my hand over the back side of the carbs when it was cranking and it sucked my hand in and it started... then it died. I hope this makes sense to some1 but i am so high on gas fumes right now i dont think im making sense...

Been there my friend. A hint from one of the other brothers put me on track. I'm not sure why this worked but it did for me.

Take some "cling film" food wrap and cover the mouth of each carb. Use an elastic band to hold them tight like the skin on a drum. Take a ball point pen and jab a little hole in the center of each.

To get sufficient cranking time a) make sure your battery is good b) add a second car battery in series. If its in a car LEAVE THE CAR OFF or the electricals can get fried.

Have the choke on full and make sure fuel is flowing from the tank or the remote tank if you use one.

Crank away and I'm certain it will fire. It may take a few minutes so don't dispair.

Once it starts running, leave the choke on for a few minutes until it 'warms up" then gradually decrease it. If it won't idle try adjusting the airscrews then the idle control knob. You will likely need to fiddle with the idle but it will eventually run right.

Now a couple of other things to know and or check which could affect starting:
a)Have you replaced the o-rings between the carb intake boots and head? If not ...you need to.
b) Have you checked valve clearances? If not...as per above.
c)Are you sure your battery is good and that you are getting spark. If the battery registers under 12.5 volts at rest there is not enough voltage to give good spark. The starter will turn her over but you won't get a spark sufficient to "light the fires".

Give this a whirl and lets see where you get.
