Dishwasher cleaning? Safe? Bad? Awesome?

Hey guys,

So I want to clean all the grime off my head and cylinders that I just pulled. I tried degreaser, but man is it on there. A guy at work recommended putting them in my dishwasher with some Tide.

Safe? Bad? Awesome?

Its that or $60 for the head to be blasted, then I'd have to repaint.

The valves are still in the head, for the record. Everything else is gone.

Also, I talked to a performance bike shop just to see what they do. They suggest a valve job (obviously), but it would cost $32.50 a valve after the $60 cleaning.

Engine parts in the dishwasher, yup pretty sure that equals a fight at least.

Just take the thing to a car wash and start shovin' coins in, for me to clean an entire v6 block and heads was 5 bucks, did the valves myself after.

Actually, you need to disassemble the head COMPLETELY first but a dishwasher works GREAT for cleaning bike parts! When I was a kid we used to clean all of our race engine Holleys in the dishwasher. DON'T use laundry soap! Use regular dishwasher soap. Also, I can do your valve job for a LOT less than that & I build race engines. Call me at 714-356-7845 if you want some help. Ray.

Rapidray, where do you live? I'd have to ship it, huh?

I don't have a valve spring compressor, so how would I get the valves out? What would happen if I dishwashered it with the valves in?

You can do a valve job and replace the valve stem seals..very important, as long as you're this deep. Clean it all up with some Purple Power, it's great stuff, usually found at your local auto parts supplier. Wear some gloves though, that stuff is pretty strong. Then I took it to the car wash and pressure washed it well.

Wow. I just have no clue about the valves, even if they need anything. Would people be mad at me if I didn't get a valve job at this point?

If you have it apart already, it would be a waste not to do it now. Unless, of course, you just like spending money on gaskets & taking it apart over & over! LOL! Ray.

Well, here is my predicament:

Gasket set: 220 bucks
Rings: 140 bucks
Misc. cleaners, etc: 20 bucks

If I send it to you, thats 300 bucks, then I have to paint it. Then I'll probably have to get all new shims! It adds up quick.

That is where I am at. I broke into this thing to replace a leaky gasket. Other than that, it ran alright.

Well, going to throw my cylinders in the dishwasher tonight, no soap, and see what happens.

I use a cleaner I got at Costco called Oil Eater.. Stuff works awesome.
It comes in a squirt bottle bundled with a gallon jug refill.

Spray it on with the squirt bottle.. let it sit for 3-5 min, scrub a bit with a brush on the thick spots and blast it off with the pressure washer..

I've seen a lot worse. You might just get away with it!

I've done it on smaller parts when the wife was at work and I had the day off. Just don't tell her! It works very well.... :-$ :-#
