Dumb question installing progressive 11-1107's

Searched around and found different answers to this question so I'm still unsure how to proceed. Hopefully someone will be able to clarify for me....

I'm doing a fork seal replacement and progressive spring update on the front end of my '82 1000 kat with anti-dives still there but disabled and am at the point of putting everything back together. Reading the installation notes that came with the progressives it tells me I need no spacer. But the spring that was in there before (I have no idea if it was stock or not) is longer than the progressive! Is this what others have found with these types of fork?

Dimensions are:
original spring: 480mm
progressive spring: 455mm
(they are 11-1107's which are the correct springs for the machine)

Looking at the fische I don't see anything missing from my forks and when assembled with the original spring there's about 3/4" of preload, with the progressive there's less than none. That's not right is it?

I have read where some members doing this update have used a spacer and others that did not. Seems to me to retain the normal preload I'd have to use a 25mm spacer to make up the difference - right?

I know from doing this on my other bikes that preload is something you have to measure sag and mess with when back on it's wheels but I'd like to at least get in the ball park.

Can anyone that's done this offer advice, I'm confused :-k

Yeah, thanks Dale. I did read Brian's post when searching around. Not the article though obviously...

I just called progressive 'again' and finally got a body to talk to. Says their installation notes are "not worded the best they could be" - damn skippy! He said somewhere in the notes it says the recommended preload is 3/4" even though the dedicated note they bothered to include for this machine says no spacer needed. The recommended preload statement overrides the no spacer note apparently! Nice to know.

Guess I should have read the installation notes from front to back eh?

Who reads the installation instructions? I didn't. Way too confusing!

What I did was put the bike on the centerstand, placed a board on top of my floor jack- under the down pipes- pulled the stock springs, dropped in the new and added the necessary 19mm pre-load. Checked statick sag, took it for a ride and and called it good. I could have fudged it a wee bit up or down but it handled great so I left it where it was. I even have the tie strap still on the fork leg from measuring the static sag. ;)

Kept it there to check suspension travel from time to time.

Yep, planning on the usual 3/4" preload then see where that gets me when I measure the sag.

I just couldn't believe progressive were suggesting having no preload let alone having a gap in there!

All's making sense again.... must be time for a cuppa :)
