GS1150 rear wheel

Question: I have a rear wheel that is a 17X2.5, there's a 140 tire on it now. If I put the wider 17X3 wheel on it, can I get a wider tire in there without rubbin' stuff? I read the manual and the original tire is a 130. Will I have to change out the chain for a 530 and space out the sprockets to get a wider tire in there? How wide can I go with just the chain and 3 inch wheel swap? 150? 160? Also, I'm lookin' for a rear factory 17X3 wheel, anybody sellin' one? there's one on ebay now I'm watching. I wouldn't go any wider than a 150 bias ply on a 3" wheel. Some of the 1150s had a 3.5" wheel. You could go 160 bias on that fairly easily. That is probably about as wide as you can go in the stock swingarm.

Yes, the '84's had 3.0 wheels, and the '85 and '86 had 3.5

So how can I tell the width of the wheel? I thought it was cast in the side of the wheel itself. I got the 17X2.5 figure from the casting. Is there somewhere else to tell, or just measure it? So if the wheel is a 3.5", and I measure the width without taking the tire off, from the outside to outside of the rim or bead what measurement should I get?

Yes, it's cast on the side of the rim. If your wheels are original from your bike, then they should be 3.5"

I have an 85' 1150 rear wheel on the 700E, and the measurement is on the casting.

When measured, the 3.5 is actually between the tire beads inside the wheel, not including the outer lip. From the outer lip to outer lip, it measures about 4.75 to 5.0 inches.

well I finally did it. I got time to go out and take pictures of the rim. As far as I know, this is the original rim. The bike is titled as a 1985 1150 suzuki. The casting designates the rim as a 17X2.50 inch rim, am I correct?

I want to put the widest rim made for this bike on it. So that would be a 3.5 inch, correct? Anybody have a 3.5 rim for sale? I'll probably post it in the parts wanted section. Billy, Reno, and Tejas, thanks for the help.

It's not the stock rim. The '84 had a 3.0 and the 85-86 had 3.5. Your rim must have come from an 1100.

You might try that guy in Canada..peuseau or something like that...he usually has alot of 1150 parts

Bruce is correct on the models though.

I paid $130 on the-bay for the one I have, really good condition with new rear rubber sprocket carrier cushions/dampeners. Sometimes the wheels come up ever so often. Just have to keep an eye out.

Just to make note, given this is a 1150 rear wheel thread, that will come up in a search. On the GS700, the 1150 wheel needs the 700 bearings, which are smaller ID on the bearing race for the axle. Other than that it is pretty much a direct bolt on, but I did put in a few 1mm spacers to to keep the chain tire,and rotor in perfect allignment. I think it would have worked without the spacers, but I'm just nit-picky. Other mention is the chain guard and rear caliper torque arm on the 700 are real close with a 130 tire if wanting to keep these items.

Oh, the front should be a 2.75 on your 85' 1150 unless it has been swapped.

The caliper torque arm can be bent to clear the tire if need be.
