Went to look at a bike a guy from work has. said he rode it home and then it started leaking fuel from where the carbs bolt on around the airbox plenum. Wants 300.00 firm.

So I say ok I will come by and see what ya got going on. Just got back and this is what I found. 1975 bone stock, 100% complete, newer tires GL1000 Goldwing. No dents, original paint, no rusted chrome, pretty clean engine for a 40 year old bike.

Yes..300.00 and clean green Oklahoma title in his name. Gonna bring it home Saturday afternoon.

Nice score, Chuck.

Welcome to the first full liter bike from Japan.

Depending on how much you plan on doing to it, be aware that it had a few items that were "one year only".
Honda learned from their mistakes and made several changes for the '76 model year.

Story he tells is this. He got the bike from some guy in Stillwater OK which is about 1 hr northeast of Norman. About half way home it started coughing and some gas was leaking from the carbs. He gets it home and discovered the fuel was coming from the area the carbs bolt on in the center where there is a rectangular hole the airbox seats into. He has the airbox out now and pointed the area out to me.

So he isnt that mechanically inclined and decides its way over his head to fix, throws some Stabil in the tank and shoves it to the side of the garage last summer and its not moved since. So now the question is whats the root causes to check as to why the carbs are dumping like this.

Also, I noticed ( for whatever reason ) he has pulled all the wires off the plugs. I asked him if he knew what one went where and he sheepishly admitted he didnt pay that close attention. So, I will have to figure out what wire goes where. How are the cylinders numbered on a Gold wing???

Needs fork seals too. Tires are good enough to get running and test ride it. Took the cap off the front master and the fluid is crystal clear and the lever feels great too.

Wire wheels on a vintage Wing, and the garage space to keep it in. Jealousy on two fronts!

It looks like someone took really good care of that thing for a good many of its years.

How many miles on it? Looks low mileage.

Thats HIS garage guys. My bikes are in the local storage units. He has a little 250 Virago there also. You can see the scratch on the back right corner of then tank. Got through the paint and into the primer. Has some not so good matching touch up paint on it. Gonna have to ponder that for a while. But it WILL NOT get a repaint. If it wasnt for that one scratch and breaking of the pinstripe it would be almost flawless. At this point I am thinking a good cleaning and some hand rubbing with some rubbing compound to clean the surface real good and call it good. For a 40 year old paint job, its like having a wife that 65 and looks like a Victoria secrets model....LOL

OH MY FRIGGINN GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didnt even look at the miles. Blew up the one pic and it says...........79,333 for god sakes!!! HMMMM...got me a little worry going on . The battery was flat and I did get to turn it over either..OOPs.

If its done I can always part it and make back the 300.

IS that high mileage for this engine?
I recall reading an ad way back when that boasted of getting a million "high performance" miles outta them.

Looks good for almost 80k miles. Those engines are understressed. If it was decently maintained, which is certainly looks like it has been, it should be good to go.

I dont know if that HIGH mileage, midlife, or put a bullet in it mileage. Never had a Goldwing before. Guess a lot would depend on the frequency of oil changes and other upkeep??????

Hydraulic lifters on these I wonder? Steve?
Damn I will go look it up.

IIRC, there is something about the cam chains needing replacement before 100,000 miles and every 100,000 thereafter.
If they break, the valves get bent. Sound familiar?
Beautiful bike and probably good for a few hundred thousand more miles with good care. GREAT SCORE Chuck!!!

Look down on the engine from above, you will see that one side is just a bit farther forward than the other (I don't remember which one). The cylinders are numbered from front to back.

Nothing to worry about there, it's just barely broken in.

Not sure about a million, but several hundred thousand are common. The highest one that I have personally seen was a 1200 (1985 model) that had 385,000 on it.

My 2000 Wing has just over 185,000 miles and is just now starting to show signs of leaky valve seals. About 1 in 15 or 20 cold starts, there will be a very brief puff of blue smoke.

Just like any other engine.

That is not really very high for that engine. How worried would you be about finding a 1980 GS with 70,000 miles? Exact same number of miles per year, but the water cooling and under-stressed design of the Wing, it is that much less to worry about.

No, hydraulic lifters did not show up until 1984, on the 1200 engine.

IIRC, there is something about the cam chains needing replacement before 100,000 miles and every 100,000 thereafter.

Right concept, wrong detail. There are belts driving the cams, not chains. If they were chains, they would not break, but Honda felt they would be too noisy and chose to use belts.

Yes, this is an "interference" engine. If the belts break, it's cheaper to find a new engine than it is to repair this one. The general recommendation is to change them every 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. If there is no recollection of changing them, do it NOW. NAPA carries belts for it that are about half the cost of Honda belts. That will save you just about enough money to also change the tensioners. Yes, two of them, one for each belt.

About the only other thing that goes out somewhat regularly on the early Wings is the water pump. You will see evidence of a leak from a weep hole in its housing before it fails totally. Certainly enough warning to be able to change it before anything drastic happens.
