Piggy Back Shocks (Ohlins Style)

So I acquired some sets of Piggy back shocks.

I have pretty much sold 1 set to a member here & in the interest of not selling him a lemon I thought I'd better try a set out.

Here's what they look like on the Skunk:

How it looked with the stock ones:

This was on my test ride today (glorious 72 degree weather). I put about 40 miles on them and took in my favourite set of twisties locally plus a landside area "portugese bend" which has a long bumpy stretch of road. It's always moving & they are always doing repairs.

Prior to these I was running a low mileage set of stock shocks. I have ridden a reasonable number of bikes but most of my GS experience has been on either stock or Koni Shocks. I've also ridden the MDI shocks quite a bit on a 550 I had too.

These ride pretty similar to the Koni's. A significant improvement over stock. I didn't need to add any preload & that was about perfect (similar to stock with preload on about 1 or 2, I ride the skunk a bit stiffer than I did my 1000G) but plenty of preload adjustment available for someone with more than my svelte 165lbs.. :D
These have 40 point rebound adjustment & around 25 seemed pretty good for inital ride. (I have had the spring off & the first 10 - 15 clicks don't do too much in honesty).

They are rebuildable - not sure about the longevity but they seem of a decent quality. I didn't take them apart but they appear to come apart the same way as the Koni's. Shaft is the same size as stock shock.

Not 100% sure I like the look on the skunk (one of the reasons I didn't go for Posplayr's Ohlins that were for sale recently).

If anyone else is interested in these I have a set for the G bikes (850 / 1000G) that I will be prepared to let go. (Eye to Eye, Stock length).

With you in that I'm not sure I like them on the skunk. Look nice on the right bike though.

So where did you get them? Are there more for sale? Any other styles? How much are they?

A parts haul, they are made in China.
I have seen other styles of the same make (RFY) around on Ebay etc occasionally.

Depending on how the longevity goes I may be able to track them down & get some more but I think it will be difficult as the qty's you'd have to deal in would be in the 100's so you'd have to set it up properly as a business venture.

Someone needs to build rear shocks for these things that are affordable. It seems you either have to live with the stockers or give up limb for a set of Ohlins.

I suspect you could get them shipped out of China for $200-$250 a set (incl shipping) plus any taxes due from what I have seen but I've never seen this exact model with the 40 point damping adjustment.... Guess they are Ohlins SU145 copies (like the ones on Posplayr's ED).

My biggest concern with these is longevity. How they fatigue over time & where the weak point is...

As to what they would cost at volume your guess is as good as mine at this stage.

China has a penchant for producing nice knockoff piggies. YSS shocks are chinese. You can get thier top of the lone race prep piggie back preload and damping adjustable as well as hight adjustable for around 6-700USD. They also offer many lower priced veriations with piggie back or not with less features. I plan on trying a set out on my ES this summer. You can get their middle of the road performance (still wayy wayyyyy better than stock and likely better than Koni) piggie back for around $300-400 a set.

The YSS Piggy's come in two styles. One are 30mm pistons the other 36mm pistons (SU-143 and SU145 Ohlins are 36mm for comparision).
The RG 302 - 355TRCL-01 are $699
The RG 366 - 355TRCL-01 are $989

I was actually looking at the G302RL piggies. Says they come up to 360mm and have forked fittings for all Honda and Suzuki applications. And they're only $429.00 ;) but it does seem as tho their prices went up since last I looked by a bit. Sheesh. Still, a slightly cheaper alternative to Ohlins and more features for the money. I noticed motorcyclist magazine fits all their "high performance Harleys" ( that's GOT to be an oxymoron lol ) with them so if they can hold up a big Hog I'm sure they'll handle my ol svelt by comparison GS.

All prices in China went ip
last year......

On top of that YSS aren't the new kid on the block any more. Some good reviews will justify a price increase.... I suspect the piston on the copies I have is 30mm.

Still have a set of these with Eye to Eye to fit the G models if anyone is interested....

In other words: How much? :D

Sorry thought this was the For Sale thread... should have looked at the first post more closely.

Same as the other set, $200 shipped.

If I hadn't gotten my hands on a cheap Works shock I would have gotten a YSS. The lead engineer came from WP.

I should have read the rest of the thread, prices do look like they've gone up. Still a good value though. More than most are willing to pay. I guess it just depends on if the bike is a keeper or not.

After a season of riding on the eye to clevis set I bought from Dan I have to say I'm pretty pleased. They ride great and seem to have softened up a touch after some riding. Been riding a lot 2 up lately and with the dampening up a few notches they provide a pretty comfortable but sporty ride. These and the Progressive fork springs transformed the bikes handling.
