Quick question....GS450 Sport Sprocket Sizes...

Hey guys, I recently bought my GS 450 Sport. They bike came with new sprockets but not a new chain. I was wondering what the stock sprocket sizes is?

This is what I have:

Front: 16 Teeth
Rear: 42 Teeth


Also....What is a good Sprocket Setup for these older 450's.....

Looks like the front sprockets match up.....


Should I locate different sprockets to get a faster acceleration?

From my knowledge so far if I run this setup my acceleration will be decreased.

To me that's more of a personal preference.

While you may lose a little acceleration you will gain a little more relaxed rpm's at any given speed.

Wait a minute......you said your wife may want to ride with you? Then you may want the larger sprocket. No offense of course, just may want the little extra torque out of first gear.

Yes you are right BIG_Rich..... I want that tq regardless. Not planning to do a ton . Btw my wife is about 120lbs. No offense taken.

What would be a good size to match my front sprocket of 16t....

Should I just spend the money and just reorder new ones for front and and rear.
Like I said previously....These new sprockets came with the bike. I didnt lose money there.

Eddie, if I was you I'd start with stock and see how you like it.

16T front, 45T rear, and 104 link 530 chain is what you want for stock.

I never had any issues with acceleration or rev's at top speed with mine on stock gearing.

You didn't mention what type of riding you plan on doing, but a smaller back sprocket is usually a poor choice with a smaller engine. Sure the revs are lower, but you spend more of your time in a lower gear, all you really get is a slower bike that uses more gas and wears out faster. It won't pull sixth gear all the way out anyway.

Thanks, Thats all I wanted to know. Yea, If it is stock right on the bike then it rides fine to me. But I will update ya guys by this weekend when I tear her down. Thanks for the info. 16,45 combo is what Ill end up doing.

Stock gearing for a GS450S is 15/45 according to the factory service manual and the 1980 Cycle Rider review I have, but that is way too low. I tried it just out of curiosity. The GS450 engine pulls a 16T front well and I run 16/45 like Pete has. Stock gearing for the L models if I'm not mistaken is 16/43. I'd think a 42T rear would be on the small and tall side unless you go down to a 15T in front. 16T on the front seems right for these motors.

That's weird (but good to know) as the parts fiche says the E and S have the same 16T/45T sprockets.

So that would mean there's an additional difference between the E and S that hasn't been noted before.

I'll have to verify the info in the factory service manual. The PO was smart enough to buy one and gave it to me with the sale. There's a supplemental section just for the S model and it may be in there.

I do distinctly remember reading the reviewer's comment about the 15/45 gearing being too short for the bike in the old magazine I bought.
