shortening control cables

This picture made me think about a question I've had for awhile. This is not my bike, but mine looks a lot like it af far as handlebars goes...

This bike ROCKS as far as I'm concerned... it looks excellent; better yet, it has handlebars just like I do... Daytonas. (or so I think they are).. Anyway, much better than the original boat-tillers... But, my cables are significantly longer than I think they should be to make the install look really good, like this one above... How do I go about ordering control cables (throttle, clutch, possibly brakes) that are the right length? Anyone got ideas on where, and steps to do that correctly?

I'm running my original cables, and although they work great, they have lots of extra 'slack'...

Didn't want to hijack the parallel thread on improving appearance of a GS also running in this forum heading right now... so thought I'd pose this question here.

Why not measure up the cables from a model that already had shorter bars, such as a G, instead of the highriser L model bars?

well, that would work I suppose, except I do'nt have a 'G'. Was more wondering if there was a way to measure what I needed, and then find a place to make them for me?

Is this not something that existing parts places know about?

I'm getting along with the way I have it, with the extra 'drip-loop' in them... but thought maybe someone had been down this road before.

Thanks for the idea, though. You're on the same track as I am, only going the other way.

Think you can have yours shortened....

Think you can have yours shortened....

A custom chopper shop can shorten yours , by recutting the inner and outer cables and resoldering the ends. If your cables are in good shape that may be an option, you can try to do it your self but it might not be easy to get the ends looking nice. I have seen pictures before on the internet of this being done but can't find them now. We have done it on dirt bikes a long time ago, didn't always turn out looking perfect but it worked. You might practice on a junk cable from a parts bike to learn how.
