stumped by turn signals

The bike is a 1982 GS850G.

I have had the bike since 7/4/08. I have a number of things resolved but I am stumped on turn signals. The bike had no turn signals and a recently replaced turn signal switch (on handle bar). I put some Katana turn signals on it. They light but do not flash.

I have been through grounds till the cows have come home.

I have put in new 1156 bulbs all around.

I have even been looking at the wiring diagram, in color no less. Everything looks on the money.

I have tried a different handle bar switch, no impact whatsoever.

I have tried both thermal and electronic flashers. No turn signal lights at all with them. I have tried the flasher from another 82 850G and I had no lights at all with that either.

So please tell me a way out of this dark and lonely tunnel.

DPEP, you have to know the answer. Speak now and let me see a little light!!

Man...sounds like you've covered everything that I would have mentioned. There has to be an easy explination, guess we'll both have to wait to find the answer.

EDIT...or at least let Cliff beat me to a now useless post, but hey...it was my 2,000th worthless post, anyway.

with all three methods they light but don't flash, correct or not?

have you substituted the turn signal control unit (not the flasher) from the other '82 g

They only light with my original flasher. I will follow basscliffs suggestions and see if I score.

It has been most confusing and troubling.

Find the shop manual for a '82 850-1100 it will tell you how to test the t/s control unit or grab the one from your '82 1100g.

did you replace the turn signal switch with the correct one?
why did you replace the left hand (turn signal) switch?

I am pretty sure you need to use 21W single pole bulbs in the turn signals, If you use the 1156 it is too many watts and the system won't work. You will need the electronic flasher. the turnsignals come back to a single ground, front and rear, take this ground back to your battery or a new ground on the frame and bypass the autocancel box that should resolve your issue.

My turn signals come on and stay on without flashing if my battery is weak. Have you checked the condition of your battery?

Could possibly be connected to the wrong wire. I think there's a brown wire used for parking lights and a solid gray wire for the signals. Are you connected to the gray wire for left and right signals? Another is a gray with black stripe. I think that's the ground wire.

Of course, I'm going merely by memory....but I did replace my signals and signal relay recently (with an electronic).

My turn signals work, but my day time running lights on the front do not light up.

I have a 1980 GS1100 L, are the running lights supposed to be on?

Mine aren't on, either. Just used as turn signals. I don't think it's a requirement.

Vic, Generally on the GSs the "running lights" are on the same circuit as the Headlamp/Tail-lamp(NOTbrakelamp) and gauge lights. If all those things are working, its likely NOT a fuse. I would crack open the headlight bucket and start having a look. Im not sure what colour those wires are, but since they are right there, you can easily trace them. I do believe there will be THREE wires coming out of each signal. One powers the running light, one powers the signal light, and one is a ground. Pull your headlamp off its plug, and, with the ACC on, play with the connections in there. If you have a multimeter or a test light, it would come in handy. I am NO electrical guy, I had to have Steve show me all this, but once you sort out the rats nest thats in that bucket, its pretty straight forward. Could be bad connections in the arse connectors, or could be spilt wires, or worse still, some jack handy PO before you went bucky wild with the strippers/cutters in there. Thats what WE found in my bucket. Had that bike ever had a Windjammer or anything on it?? Another thought too, is I *THINK* those bulbs were originally DUAL filement bulbs. I dunno if they'd fit, but someone could have replaced them with single filiment bulbs. But that might make them run all the time and not be brighter when the signal was on. hrmmm... Like I said, im no electrical guy..lol

I replaced mine with cat eye single filament. Stumped me for a while when I installed them. They'd stay on all the time and get dimmer (if blinking at all) when I turned on the signal 'til I disconnected the running light wire and taped it off. No more running lights. Just signals.

On my 82 GS1100gk the front running/ turn lights do stay all the time but I have a fairing
so don't know if that makes a differance. I also had a blinker problem but that was because the PO had crossed 2 wires so I don't think thats ur problem. But I did notice the flashers worked better after I cleaned the flasher contacts. Now when i use the flashers the head light and other blinker flash out of sync with the 1 I have on. I suspect that to be a ground or shared power issue but havent gone looking for that yet.

blinkerless

blinkerless

HI. M81 550T had the same symptems as your ride.My fix was easy, I replaced the rectangular flasher with a automotive round three prong flaser. #556.but i was lucky. as mentioned before in light bucket.L,R blinktap at a 3 or 4 ground wire connection. clean. If its a wire try running jumper wires if noting else shows up. I changed my blinkers with short stock Yamaha SRX 250 ones. had no problem with swap considering bulbs are so diff. good luck. SAN View attachment 4510
