Swingarms different??

So RichDesmond came to get the spoked rims off the 1000C from Texas. When i went to put the 78E mag rims on the swingarm seems to narrow now. We took the wheel bearings out of the rear spoked rim and i put them in the mag rim. Other than that nothing changed. Used the C models axle and all the spacers. I didnt think to take a picture but the difference i am encountering is about the thickness of the chain adjuster metal.
It all slides right in if i remove the right side adjuster. Put the adjuster on and its a no go situation. Can anyone shed light on "what changed" just by swapping rims???

I would not think that the swingarms are different, but you never know! Any way to measure the width of the mag wheel with all the bearings & spacers? Maybe a spacer is different on the mag wheel????

Chuck, if you need me to take a measurement on the spoke wheels just let me know. Or I can run the rear back down to you to compare the fit back to back.

i was just thinking maybe the mag rims hub is a tiny bit wider than the hub on the spoked rim. Parts fiche gives same part numbers for all the spacers etc etc between the 2 models. Ill have to lay an edge down the chain and see that all is aligned correctly. I may have to get the spacer between the caliper bracket and the adjuster shaved down a little...sound plausible??

That would work. Just seems really odd that the swingarms would be different. But I've been burned by that before with Suzuki stuff.

Had some custom triple clamps machined for the SV650 race bikes back in the day, and we assumed that a stem out of either the "S" or naked models would be the same. Lower stock triple is identical, and there's no earthly reason for the uppers to be a different thickness. But it turns out they are, which means the stems are a slightly different length. Makes no sense for Suzuki to produce two different parts, but they did. The "S" and the naked also had different length swingarms, again, no good reason.

Chuch, lets see. When I put a 78 750 spoked hub on my 79 1000e I had to space the brake rotor out 5mm. I'm not sure if this is relevant to what you are doing. Boy, I wish ol' Sharpy was still around, he knew all that wheel stuff. Since I added 5mm, you may need to remove 5mm somewhere.
Here is some of my mumbo jumbo dimensions that I used. I'm not sure if it will help at all. Maybe do a search, see if you can find any of Sharpy's old post. Let me know if you need any custom sized spacers made up...

I can easily enough knock a bearing out and remove the internal spacer and then out the bearing back in. If that solves the problem then its just shave down the inner spacer on my buddies lathe...all good points to ponder guys. Thanks.

theres a ring for the wire wheel cush drive that not on the mag drive. Not surre if that adds or subtracts though

Cipher..im thinking that if the inner spacers too long theres only so far a bearing can go before being stopped...and one bearing may not be fully seated. Follow me here?

I put GS1000 spoked wheels on my GS1100E, I used the complete axle & spacers that were from the GS1000 & all fit perfect, When I put the cast wheels back on, had to use the axle & spacers that were for the cast wheels. If I remember right there was one spacer that was different.

yeah theres a certain mix and match apparently. First im gonna remove the inner spacer and resest the bearing and see what happens. IF theres a gap then i will remove that amount off the inner spacer and go for it.

I have an axle & spacer set for a cast wheel from a 78 1000E most likely.. I also have an original swingarm for the same bike. Both are buried in my loft but I can search if you need them. I can also measure what's on my running bike if necessary, should be able to get calipers to it to be accurate enough for your purposes.

I went after work and knocked a bearing out and tge inner spacer looked proud of the bearing seat so i ground some off till it was just a little lower and it all went in...a lot snugger than it seemed it should be but its in. Eyeballed down the chain and it looked straight to me. I may have that thick outer spacer surface ground 30 thousands for a little more play and ease of reinserting later on when its time for tires.
