    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Weird "vibration" and chain?

First time I've ridden my '78 GS750 any distance (50km) and it has a weird vibration which is most obvious at slower speeds .. especially when decelerating. It's also mostly felt through the footpegs, but seems to be coming from the rear swingarm assembly.

I suspect it's the chain with a rough link(s) and/or the front sprocket is a bit funky. I think I'll just change all to be on the safe side.

I've checked the rear swingarm bushing (play) and wheel bearings and they seem OK.

Any other suggestions?
 
Check the chain tension.

If there is too much slack, the chain can bang on the swingarm as you are slowing down.

Make sure the chain is not too tight. If you replace it Think about a conversion to 520 ? chain

Wiggle your Swingarm to check bushin ang bearing play as well. The things so wear and the tazy movement from worn parts can drive you mad.
 
I had something like this last summer, turned out to be chain being too tight, with weight on the bike and the rear sprocket deflecting up and down about 2mm.
I could feel it on decel but no other time.

I fixed it by replacing the rear sprocket and setting the proper tension with the weight of two passengers on the bike.
 
my Gs1000 had a similar problem kept checking chain sproxs ,when i had it engine stripped
down we noticed front sprox splines on the shaft were badly warn so 95000 miles it
done well me thinks replaced complete gear box ,no more probs ,luckly the guy who done
my rebuild had a good one he didnt need.
