whats your favorite GS?

timebombprod

Forum Sage
just a simple question not much to explain about it, see plenty of people on here with multiple GS models and was wondering whats your favorite one?

Red 1983 GS1100E (D) - the one my '82 is painted to look like.

Of course if I could afford the equivalent Kawasaki...it'd probably be too valuable to risk riding.

Gosh, that's not a simple question. For looks & power, an "85" GS1150E in pearl cool white & candy alpine blue is by far the leader, but I sold mine, it ain't comfortable, for me, to ride for anything more than about a 100 mi. Those old GS1000E models are very comfortable & also nimble but lack the power of the 16V 1100's. Maybe the "82" GS1000SZ, the most powerful of the GS1000's with the 16V technology, but with a futuristic space aged look, still futuristic in today's standards, so much so it's about as eye catching as any bike anywhere, but certainly not good looking.& the cloth seat just didn't make sense. I love my "83" GS11ooE, but dang it's fugly. Dark navy blue with black eng., black exhaust, black handlebars, black mirrors, black turn signals, there's absolutely no contrast in anything, but it can't be too bad or I wouldn't own it. See, like I said, a very hard question.

My favorite is the one that someone's going to hand me the keys to and say "It's yours"

My favorite GS, is mine

My favorite GS, is mine

Must be my 82 GS1100G, purchased August 2007 with 21,710 miles. The only bike I've never been able to part with.

My favorite GSs would be the 83 1100e, preferably in red, 450 e or s, and the 1150s. Like Bill, I'm a long term owner and have no intention of selling my current cycle which I've owned since '99.

I've owned/currently own the following GS models:

1977 GS750E
1978 GS1000E
1980 GS550L
1980 GS1000G
1981 GS750E
1981 GS450E
1982 GS650E

1982 GS850G
1982 GS1100E
1982 GS1100G

1985 GS550ES
1985 GS700ES
1985 GS1150E

The GS700ES will always be my sentimental favorite. I'm the original owner, it was my first street bike, and it was my only bike for many years. The memories of my youth are inextricably tied to it, so I can't ever see myself letting go of it.

That being said, if I had to choose only one of the above as my forever bike going forward, it would be the GS1000G. It's my second most tenured ride (11 years), I've put more miles on it than any other bike since I acquired it, and it's my "go to" bike at the drop of a hat, the closest thing I have to a daily rider.

Comfortable, powerful, agile, reliable, and easy to work on. It fits pretty much all my needs for a ride at this point in my life.

I have a soft spot for my 1980 gs750e because it got me back into motorcycling after a 27 year "break"...and the 83 gs750e I just bought will be special because I had the exact same bike new when I was 18....but I gotta go with my gs1000s...I've only owned it for 3 years and have already rode it to California twice...great bike....plus it's signed by Wes Cooley..I would never sell it. :)

My first GS was an 81 850G. It was the second bike I ever owned but still my favorite for totally, like Griffin, sentimental reasons. Each one after that just reminds me of the first. I sold it in 1992 to buy an airplane ticket out of Albuquerque and moved to Georgia.

I always regretted selling that bike and have owned three GS's since. Another 81 that never got completed for various reasons, an 82 1100L that wasn't ergonomically pleasing and finally the 83 850G I have now.

I'm totally satisfied with this 83. The look of this bike is as pleasing to me as riding it, which compared to several others I've owned, is rare. There are minor differences in this 83 vs the 81 like, for instance, the shape of the tank side covers and airbox. Location of the choke, configuration of the gauges , color scheme etc. etc. which are totally fine and in some ways better IMO, but it's still not the same.

I like the L, and I like the shaft drive.
I had an 1100GL but it was heavier than I cared for.
The 850GL is pretty much the same weight as the 1100GL.
I ride a 650GL.
They made a 750GL but it's only in Japan.
I'd like to try that one.

Only two running GS motorbikes in my life...an '82, and an '83....both 1100Es.....

The '82 did the 1/4 mile in 9.0X seconds, at 14X mph....Sold that one after several years of racing....

Still have the slow '83...Ride it, like it....

I probably didn't answer the OP's question...;)

'83 750 T for me. Just the perfect UJM look, in my opinion. It lacks some features, and amenities, but it looks and rides great.

I will say that emotion plays into it for me as well. The bike that hooked me on streetriding was the 83 1100e I owned in the 90s. The Kawasaki LTD 550 that I started on is just a footnote.
I'm sure that my time with the 1100 plays into my opinion that the 82-3 1100e bikes are among Suzuki's best looking bikes.

I've had my 750 since new, still kicking myself not getting the 1100 version.

My favourite GS will always be the 82/83 Katanas. The style alone makes it a forever bike.

Having said that though, my favourite GS to ride (that I owned) was my old 81 1100E restomod... it was a total Frankenbike but performed well above the sum of its parts. Just so good. :encouragement:
