I have two bolts for my frame...

I checked the bike after work. It appears that the carb boots are moist from fuel. Also the airbox has a little gas in it.

I wonder if the petcock malfunctioned and overflowed the carbs?
No need to wonder and that's why it probably wouldn't start way back when you started this thread! When you get new petcock, make sure to check it's operation before you connect to carbs.
My mistake on tank hold down bolts- they all have two rear bolts, but I still think the G tank will fit the E

I wish I knew for sure if the G and the E tanks were interchangable, but I dont.
Perhaps you can find someone with a G to take some pics and measurements for ya?
Thats what I would do..:dancing:

Doesn't FoxyBLankworthy ride a 650G? He's not on here much, but TCK knows him.

Let me know what measurements are needed and I can get them later tonight...I'm sure there isn't going to be much difference between the 81-82 and my '83

Funnily enough his 650G is sitting in my "annex" garage right now as we speak. It's dark, and there's very little light in that garage (it's simply for storage) but I can check tomorrow. I'm near positive however that it has a single mount bolt. However I could be wrong.
Also, GS650E, I actually have a 650E suzuki shop manual in my collection. I forgot I had it. I don't have nor likely ever will have a 650E (or G for that matter, I'm spoilt on litre bikes, and a somewhat large specimen of a homo sapian so anything short of a 750 feels like a moped and looks even worse under me) so if you'd like to purchase it lemme know. It won't cost ya much, as I bought it as part of a collection of em off eBay for a reasonable amount.
It will definitely come in handy. ;)

Well I patched the hole it seems. I took the back off the petcock and it looked pretty rough...

I put the tank back on, bought a gallon of gas and put about a half of it in. Set the petcock to run... Tries to turn over but nothing. Set the petcock to reserve, nothing. Set it to prime, nothing.

I don't think the fuel is flowing, it may be not enough gas or a bad petcock.

On another note. I already bought a service manual. It's in the mail right now. Thanks though CafeKid.

Also, here is a link to the tank I have a bid on, on Ebay. It looks like two mount screws to me...

Unhooked the fuel line from the petcock. Fuel poured out when on reserve, it stopped when I went back to RUN.

I think that is a good sign. I checked two spark plugs. I think they look pretty bad, not sure. They have a brown tip.

Any ideas on the next step?

Brown/tan/grey on the ceramic going down into the plug is a GOOD sign. It means it's burning just about right. Not too rich, not too lean. Unless it's glazed gasoline...but it would likely smell like varnish instead of cordite.

However, the petcock running freely on reserve without the engine spinning is NOT a good sign. The petcock should only flow with the engine off in the PRI (prime) position. If it flows in any other position while the engine is off the petcock is shot.

You know I THINK I left it on reserve the other night when I came into the garage and it smelled like gas heavily. It probably flooded the carbs into the crankcase.

I am going to wait and see if I win the gas tank and then change the oil, plugs, and install a new petcock.

I believe it is possible to put the petcock together backwards so your PRIME position is open to the RESERVE draw and vice versa. Can anybody verify that as true?

I dunno... I never bother with taking them apart. I just throw them in the garbage and buy a new one. I tried a rebuild once... failed.

They're not very successful.

Cafe,

Did you ever check the G tank? I have about a day and a half left on the tank bid, I want to be able to back out if the tank will not work.

Thanks

Gssuzuki.com would be the best place to buy a oem petcock, correct? I want the full assembly, no?

I think TKent02 put an E tank on his 650g. You might send him a PM to verify.

This one here is an 81, 650G. Has two bolts vertically mounted holding the tank.

Okay, thanks. It should work then. I have two vertical bolts holding my current E tank.

I read on a wiki that the G tank holds 6 gallons, and the E holds 4.5. I don't know how accurate a wiki is though :p

DO NOT get one from Z1 unless it is an OEM vacuum unit. Also, the fit varies between tanks. Make sure you have the tank you are going to use BEFORE you purchase the new petcock. It may be different.

Re-sealed the airbox. Fits nice and snug.

Tried to start it, nothing. The starter sounds pretty bad now, probably from the cold weather and constant starting....sucks.
