Hi Guys,
just joined the site so will take a bit to get used to using the forum.
I've got a 1979 GS850, build date is Dec 1978.
I've had the bike since 1980, so one year old when I got it, have always loved the bike, I've done repairs over the years and now I have retired I am cleaning it up.
As I've read so far is that the bike is a mish mash of older 750s and newer 850s, makes for interesting ordering of parts, especially gaskets!
Anyway, as I am only cleaning it up, as it runs fine, I have taken the crankcase cover off the top to clean up the oxidised alloy, when putting it back on I read different opinions on whether to put a gasket goo on, or not, or only put it on the rubber inserts (behind the round chrome covers), one site calls them cylinder head plugs with a part#09241 23002. So to goo or not to goo? Or only goo on the plugs?
Your address disappeared into electronic ether so I need it again. Has been a zoo around here, the wife’s car took a dump and threw a wrench into everything. Sorry about the delay, sure wish my pay pal worked

Not sure why I wasn't notified that you responded to my message. If you still have them I'll take the two 831100E valve cover gaskets. Shipping to 939 Manakin Rd., Midlothian, VA 23113. To Lee hardy.
May need replacing. Do you change your own oil or have a shop do it for you?
Reason I ask. Had a shop suggest a different weight oil because of bike being older.
The heavier weight oil caused issues with clutch slippage. Was more noticable when cold.
Anyways, hope you get it sorted.

Hey, just saw this message. I do my own work, I originally went to a heavier oil and the clutch wouldn't disengage at all unless it was hot. So went to the valvoline stuff I posted in the proper weight and it disengage better but now is slipping a bit. The metal clutch plates are out of spec so I definitely need to replace those, just trying to figure out what brand to get.
Hi Everyone,

My name is Victor, i'm 30 and live in the south of France and I just bought an old 1979 GS850 ! I am more than a newbie and have the mechanical abilities of a baby, but the idea is to learn and refresh this old bike. Being my first project, nothing too fancy and complicated but to make it run again.

Good morning, I'll take the (4) valve cover gaskets for 82-23. Take Paypal?

Yes i will take pay pal biggun1911@q.com for paypal. since you are buying all 4 i will discount them to 50.00 for all 4 plus shipping?
I saw your post about Zuki stickers in oldGSfans thread about crooked paint... I was wondering if you have any saved/stock Suzuki stickers available. Don't have a pressing need, but I'm in the habit of buying things I don't need because they're cool and I do have several paint projects planned for the future.
Hello everyone! Recently acquired a 82' GS1100GL, gorgeous bike! Well I've done a lot to the bike since I acquired it, I've done tank clean, carb clean, rebuilt the carb, cleaned airbox, new air filter, all the oils and brake fluids, new petcock, new fuel lines, new battery, and I'm running into issues tuning the carb. To begin I got the bike running on Saturday, 4/6 and she ran great for 20 mins, I rode her around great it just had starting problems because I drained the battery trying to start her. On the last 5 mins of that ride I got into 3rd gear and gave it throttle and she just bogged and had no response and had a little backfire, took her home threw her on the trickle charger and noted that all four pipes were hot and I would just check the carbs again on Sunday. Well Sunday comes around and I get the bike started and it has no power when in neutral and I give it a little throttle, rough idles like fluctuating up and down, and I noticed cylinder 2 and 3 are luke warm to the touch after idling for 10 mins while 1 and 4 are normal hot. Just looking for some advice, this is my first bike and its also the first real bike I've gotten the chance to tinker with and take apart and work on.
