I found this RPM limiter strapped to my bike and I'm having some real big questions about what the heck its even for. I looked it up on the Dyna website and this is what they say.

Product Overview : Accessories RPM Limiter
Accessories - Dyna Inductive RPM Limiters:
The DRL300 has an improved clamping capability, and more outputs than the DRL200. The DRL200 could clamp only 2 of our green (higher impedance) coils. The DRL300 can clamp up to 4 of our blue (low impedance) coils. This means it can be used on drag bikes, and many other applications it could not manage before (automotive HEI ignitions). In addition, the output stage has also added a separate kill input. This input works separate of the rev limiter and can function even when the rev limiter has no power. This will kill the spark whenever a 12V signal is applied to the input.

Potential uses include shift kill to kill ignitions during upshift, allowing for clutchless shifts. Instead of having to cut jumper wires to get the box to work with a particular application, and having only two choices, there are now 3 dip switches. These dip switches allow not only for a very wide range of applications (single fire thumpers to Harleys to inline 4s to 8 cylinders), but they also allow for the rev range to be adjusted from the standard 6000-12000. This means that new motorcycles with 12000+ rpm redlines can now be handled, as can applications where the limit needs to be set below 6000.
DRL-300 Features::
Continuously adjustable from 6,000 to 12,000 rpm Helps prevent engine failure
Prewired and easy to install

Whats weird is that I was having trouble getting past 5500 RPM in any gear. I thought this might have been a result on having one or two cylinders not firing as a result of fouling plugs. They were fouling and new plugs certainly improved performance, I was able to get past 5500 RPM, until they fouled again. Maybe this RPM limiter was contributing somehow?

Can anyone tell me what its uses may be and whether I should take it out and disconnect it? As best as I can tell it helps for quick shifting up a gear, like an engine cut out but I really am not sure about that.

As always, thanks for your advice! :)

That Dyna blurb pretty much explains it's purpose. If you don't drag race I'd take it off and sell it to someone that does.

Fouling plugs come from bad oil rings and or floats sticking and to much gas. As for the RPM Limiter it's OK it can only help you and the bike, but it's not needed. However if you remove it from your bike be careful because it connected to the bike kill switch and coils. Which RPM Limit do you have? If it the 300 CDI let me know I'll buy it from you.

So its basically an electronic kill so you don't over rev your bike?

I'll check and take pics once I get to the shop in a bit. The head gasket has gone so thats what I think is fouling the plugs. You can actually see the oil weeping out of the cylinder.

Yes. Rev limiter, or momentary ignition kill for clutchless shifting - drag racing stuff mostly.

How do you utilize it? Just click up without engaging the clutch?

Hey there,
I took another look at it and I can't find any model designation. Its likely been on here for some time based on how grimy it is. In any case I updated the photo so you can see for itself. Theres no sticker or markings on the back.
