To All;

I am an "original" owner of a 1979 GS1000SN.purchased 31 years ago this July 4th weekend, by myself.

I,like a lot of you,have fried my stator,for the 2nd time(approx. 10 years ago).the first time(close to 20 years ago),i purchased a new stator from the Suzuki dealer,and replaced.no replacement regulator,or rectifier(on my bike,they are 2 seperate units).first time,i did not know about the poor design of the regulator and rectifier.the second time(approx. 10 years ago),i did research,and found out about the bad Suzuki designs.so,i purchased a new stator(G2),and new combo R/R(RR10),from "Electrex" over in England,about 10 years ago.well,shortly after that purchase,i took the bike apart,and then ended up moving,shortly after my mother passed.at that point,i kind of lost interest in the bike,and found some new interest which i was pursuing.all the while,i was pretty sick,and did not know it.i kind of lost my energy,and interest in most everything.well,i finally figured it out,and now am much better,and have been cleaning the bike up,and putting it back together,with renewed energy & interest,with some help from one of the forum members here,and on SCOA.

So.this is what i'm trying to figure out. i have relpaced the stator with the Electrex part,and sealed the motor back up.taken the regulator and rectifier off,and replaced with the combo Electrex model R/R(RR10).i have read the "Stator Papers",and am still a bit misunderstanding of what is going on here.the new stator(G2) has 3 solid yellow wires coming out of it.the new R/R has 4 wires coming out of it(3-solid yellow,i-solid red).the old stator had 5 wires coming out of it(2-solid yellow,2-white w/blue stripe,1-green w/white stripe).the old regulator had 3 wires coming out of it(1-black w/white stripe ground wire,1-solid yellow,1-white w/blue stripe).the old rectifier has 4 wires coming out of it(1-solid red,1-solid yellow,1-white w/red stripe,1-white w/blue stripe).

What i have read somewhere,and been told by the forum member helping me(and i trust him,just looking for some more imput from you pros),the 3-solid yellow wires coming out of the new stator,get hooked straight up to the 3-solid yellow wires on the new R/R,which i have done.the solid red wire goes to a power hook-up.i have connected it up to the solid red wire that the old rectifier was hooked up to,on the wiring harness of the bike,located right behind where the battery sits.this wiring loom also has the white w/red stripe wire,and the green w/white stripe wire coming out of it,that the old rectifier was hooked up to.i hope that this is an ideal place to hook that red wire coming from the new R/R! if not,please let me know what to do,and where else it should get hooked up to.

After all that has been said,i still have the white w/red stripe wire,and the green w,white stripe wire,on the bike wiring harness behind the battery,not hooked to to anything now.i believe these 2 wires go the "headlight control switch",which on this bike,back in the day,when it was new,you could not control.i simply took the headlight switch lever off,and shaved of the little piece of plastic that locked it in place from being used,and made it usable.so the switch now works.

So.i just want to know if i have hooked all the new stator and R/R wires up correctly? and if i have,i don't understand why the white w/red stripe wire,and the green w/white stripe wire,that both go to the headlight switch,are not used now,and if my headlight will still work,and why these wires aren't utilized anymore?and if not to be used,what do i do with them? i believe i read in the stator papers that these were a "dump" place for excess power,coming from the regulator or rectifier,or stator.i don't remember which. and will these wires not used anymore,effect anything else on the 1979 SN model,with it's extra dashboard lights,whistles,bells,guages,etc.?

Thanks for any,and all info from you all.it is appreciated! i just want to make sure this bike is back together properly,and ready to ride again.it's pretty clean,and will be sold at some point in the not-to-distant-future,after all of this is sorted out,and back up and running fine!! Thanks again!! sorry for the long post!

Sounds like you have it right...

Try to put some spaces etc in your text, it's really difficult to read :)

The disconnected wires will not effect anything else.

If you strip the Stator wires back about 6" you will find that there is a splice in the loom to add the extra wires in, there are only 3 coming out of the part that's in the engine.

It's not a good idea to run the bike with the headlight switched off as you risk overloading both the RR & the stator. (That was the idea behind those extra wires from the stator, it turned off one leg in order to cut power produced down by a third).

Dan :)

Salty Monk;

Sorry about no spaces.i did do that in the original post,and it came out without the spaces. i have corrected.Thanks!

So, you are saying that i can still hook up the 2 disconnected wires(white w/red stripe,green w/white stripe), by splicing off from 2 of the 3 stator wires? it just so happens that i did exactly that, before reinstalling the new stator. made sence because the original had 5 wires, so i copied it. the spliced wires are just in there not hooked up at this point. from what i read, you didn't need to, but, i just want to be real sure about what i'm doing here, and that the final outcome won't be DISASTER!! this bike is in pretty descent shape for 31 years old! you're the only one that has responded has of yet. i was hoping that someone with a 79 1000SN like mine would respond has well, familiar with this same issue has mine. i don't know if the wiring on this bike, is like say a 78 1000e model like yours, or another model around that same year, or, if there is some just really versed on this bike. i actually have a factory(old school) Suzuki rep, right here in town where i live, and even at one point, owned a bike like this, but, i can't get him to contact me, through a bike shop owner he does part time work with, that is a friend of his, so, i gave up on him. i'm just looking for has much info on this has i can, so there are no mistakes! Thanks again to all that respond, including you!!

The charging system of the 79 GS1000's are all the same, your S Model with the additional cockpit bells & whistles sucks as much as any GS1000 C, E or L model. So since you have replaced the original stator with a Electrosport stator and run the 3 yellow wires directly to the R&R the w/red stripe wire and the green w,white stripe wire do not get hooked up to anything. They just dangle there. You have eliminated that loop of the original design.

So.i just want to know if i have hooked all the new stator and R/R wires up correctly? and if i have,i don't understand why the white w/red stripe wire,and the green w/white stripe wire,that both go to the headlight switch,are not used now,and if my headlight will still work,and why these wires aren't utilized anymore?and if not to be used,what do i do with them? i believe i read in the stator papers that these were a "dump" place for excess power,coming from the regulator or rectifier,or stator.i don't remember which. and will these wires not used anymore,effect anything else on the 1979 SN model,with it's extra dashboard lights,whistles,bells,guages,etc.? )

You have eliminated that loop of the original design and no further action is required on your part. Visit Basscliff's website and open up the GS1000 service manual Pdf and review the electrical schematic. What you still need to address is the grounds of the charging system so it can "dump" the excess power generated at higher RPM's. The achilies heel of the GS charging system is poor grounds. Have a look at Posplayr thread below

Have fun

I was saying if you strip the loom back a bit you can access the splice and remove the extra stator connections.
You can also just blank them off too.

Seems like you have it fine. Just don't turn the headlight off and make sure you run a ground direct from RR to battery.

Salty Monk;

Where would this "ground" wire get hooked to on the r/r? just at the mounting bolt, holding it to the frame, then to the negative(-) post of the battery?

Hook it up to wherever the black white on the RR is hooked up and yes straight back to the battery.
When I did it with an rr like that I just made a 12 or so gauge wire with two hoop fixings one at either end. One bolted to mounting bolt that had the original black whites hoop on it and the other end to bat neg.
