Just spotted at The Tail of the Dragon

My opinion, prettiest bike ever made was the "85" GS1150 "E" in pearl cool white and candy alpine blue. Finally got me one, pristine, lo mil., all orig. but it just didn't fit me as well as a GS1100 or GS1000. Finally sold it to a GSR member, thinking user name was Heads bikes and mopars... Haven't heard from him for a while... Dang that bike looked good.

Best of the GS for what I do and they fit me well. Just waiting for another right one to come up for sale near me. The styling is bit chunky but not bad (sort of like an 84 Corvette) but the suspension/tires/brakes/engine all work pretty well. I've had 3 so far. Most annoying problems I've had are pretty minor, dealing with bodywork tabs and the mirrors folding back at speeds above 100MPH.
You don't need mirrors at that speed anyway.

I like the look, very 80's, makes me think about my dad's GSX1100F, looks like the successor to this model, but 90's style.

I enjoyed mine, and it was far superior to several other bikes that I enjoyed more (the XS11, the VF1000R, etc.). It just didn't trip any emotional switches in me.

Great bikes, always liked them and nice to see one being used. However I can't think of how it could be properly used on the Dragon with that silly drag pipe limiting the ground clearance.

Enjoyed an XS11 more than a GS1150??? Well guess I've heard stranger things... It's simple Sandy, you'd learn quite quick. Careful in the righties, then make up for it in the lefties.

That's cool seeing one out in the wild. Other then mine and two others owned by friends years ago, I've seen maybe 4 1150s in person ever.

The XS11 was a more visceral motor. The way it made power right on the bottom was a real blast. Mine was mildly modded (pipe, jet kit), and I absolutely loved it.

There was an XS11 rally this last weekend near Deals Gap and in usual fashion they where too snooty to even think about talking to someone like me that actually rides on a daily basis! Absolutely loved my XS. The community, not so much. The Voyager XII folks are pretty much the same way ..

Strange. The GS really work for me however I like all old bikes. I know a few people that had XS11 and they all say they were pretty gutsy. I really prefer the looks of any GS over Yamahas though but realize that's just to do with personal taste.

Meant nothing bad about the Yammy's. but to me looked more bulky than sporty, just seemed heavy, shaft would pick up the back end pretty bad, and seemed waay better for low end torque than peak HP. Like block I like all the old bikes from my hay day and tickled to hear all thoughts and opinions of any of those old bikes.

I never considered the XS to be a sporty bike. It was a muscular standard (I did not have the funky "Special" but rather, the standard). Like I said, the bottom end was a blast.

Aesthetically, I think the GS1100 and up were the best looking of their line. But Yamaha was making some great looking bikes (IMO) then, too. The Radian was about perfect from a looks perspective-and it hustled for a 600 at the time. I actually liked the Fazer.

And Honda was right up there aesthetically with the CB700 Nighthawk.

Dang, why can't I be less controversial... Always did and still do loved the Nighthawk "S", the black and red or black and blue, sporty ones... The plain Nighthawk, to me, resembled the Suzuki "T" models, they were OK, but sure not near an "S".

I think we are all talking about the S (to my knowledge, the 700 was never used in the regular Nighthawk variant, at least Stateside).

I agree, always liked the look of those bikes.
The red, white and blue model was my personal favourite.

Looked good because it resembled CB1100.

And the bulky XS11 had a shaft. And you know how I feel about shafts. I get a kick out of reading old Yamaha ads that say, "And the best part, it has shaft drive." That is so laughable to me. Sorry, Mr. Y. If it has a shaft drive and it's not a V-Max, I won’t even look at it.

Then you have clearly never ridden a BMW or a Moto Guzzi, both of which are frequently brilliant and which nearly always have shafts.

I actually preferred the XS11 to my VMax. You could ride across town and still have gas in the tank in the XS.

Yamaha had shafts figured out reasonably well, much better than Honda. My V65 was an awful bike, top heavy and the shaft would jack the bike what felt like one foot when I hit it. I sold it completely disgusted, a day or so later I looked at an old VMAX my friend was looking at and the seller offered me to try it. I did and immediately went down to the Yamaha dealer and bought a new one. it was night and day better than the Honda.
