    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

New GS1100 G Restoration Project. Rebuilding my Dad's bike

ron - indeed. I find it quite disconcerting driving a car and not even knowing where the sparks plug are located on it. It was my Dad tinkering with his Triumph 650 Tiger back in the '70s that got me going. And as a comparison, I built a PC with my son a few years ago which was great but PCs are now dead. Air cooled bikes are still alive. How can you upgrade a tablet with a new graphics card? The skills he learned doing that with me aren't even of use 5 years later. I don't suppose either of my teenage boys will end up tinkering on bikes. Can't imagine what they will be doing when they are my age. My Dad's cherished GS1100 will probably be scrap again by then! I am looking for a museum to donate it to before I go!

Rear Brake Caliper Paint Preparation. Now what?

Now what:

Do I paint or powder coat? I am sending the frame and other pieces to the the powder coaters soon. I could add these.

If I am painting what is the best paint preparation? I have had bubbling occur on my test samples when I have cured them.

in my experience powdercoating is much more resistant to brake fluid (spills) than any spraycan paint. it's also more dureable and easily hides little imperfections in the aluminium, so that's my preferred choice. in fact, finding chemicals resistant paint that's suitable for aluminium would be very hard if not impossible, i think.

your paint bubbling may have to do with using paint that's not suitable for alu, too high baking temp or too quick drying process.

if you're powdercoating, make sure to mask/plug all the holes, etc. powder is VERY hard to remove once fully dried.

I got all my carb parts back from the plater today so I need to get going on the carb rebuild (along with 100 other jobs!). Here are some before and after shots of the cadmium plating done on the parts. I like it a lot. Not too shiny.

Definitely powdercoat, as brake cleaner and brake fluid eat everything else I've tried. That Cad plating looks great!

The powder coater said he would not do the brake calipers as the preparation process (including some sort of blasting) and the necessity to mask off the cylinders was too problematic. So looks like I have to do some more practice with the VHT paint. At least the satin finish I have requested is near enough the same as the caliper paint so no one should notice the difference.
 
Big T - thanks for that. I think you are right. My preparation is at fault. I will soon be getting an Ultrasonic cleaner and that should help.

Help me out here guys. The powder coaters said they wouldn't paint them so I had another go myself and it still bubbled up:

I think it is oxidation in those areas. I either need to vapour blast them first or bake them in the oven to make sure the oxidation is not holding any moisture. What do you think?

I've got some Brick Acid which I think is 18% hydrochloric. Will that do? Or where do I find some who can dip them for me?

I have no experience, but I think I read somewhere paint should be cured in steps increasing the heat each time? or possibly it says 200f and youre cooking 200c ?

might be ok, i had a load of stuff dipped at a local speedy strip once. they do anything from wooden doors to wrought iron gates. only charged me a couple of quid to soak the parts for an hour. came out like brand new

ditto on this one. i had the same problem :o

i think you have too much paint on vs curing time / temperature.

either apply thinner coats of paint and bake after each one OR

apply as much paint as you have done - that's quite a thick coating you have there - then leave to dry for a few days before baking. when you do bake it, do it on a lower temp but over longer time

My first thought was your paint was too thick. Multipile thin coats is better. Mind you I'm not an expert. I'd use a solvent based product before I use acid to clean. I'd fear etching the machined areas.

I use a degreaser (simple Green) and a scrubbing brush, then wash in very hot water, air dry with compressed air and then blow dry till all moisture is gone and paint while it's still warm.
I use VHT Caliper Paint Satin Finish and cure at 200F for 1 hour per the instructions.

So far it's worked well, here's the rear brake caliper as a sample of what it looks like.
