A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi everyone
The name here is Eric, and I just brought home my 'new' 1984 GS1100GKE.
I am starting a frame up restore on her and hopefully will be riding by next summer. I am a new rider, and plan to take the MSC in April when the classes start up again. I will try to document some of the trials of the rebuild as I go through it. Since it's the holiday season...Merry Christmas and Happy (and safe) New Year to all!

Eric

Tells us something about himself and posts a picture, you'll fit in here just fine. Welcome to the site "esolliday", you'll find everything you need to know to get that bike running like new on this site, welcome. What are you going to do with the bike? keep it a touring bike or strip it down to something more sleek?

Thanks for the welcome guys!
azr...right now I'm planning on keeping it stock, but want to take off the fiberglass to keep the weight down until I get more familiar with handling.
The fairing and bags are somewhere around 80 lbs total. I wanted to put the bike under 600 pounds while I'm getting used to her.

Welcome to the club. Will be watching the build progress to the completion. Good luck with it.

Larry

Eric,
Welcome to GSR.

Looks like the GK is "all there". Most GKs have been dee-Kayed by now.
Only thing I see missing is the fairing "lowers" and the stock GK mirrors on the fairing.
That windshield looks wider than stock, so must be some aftermarket.

If you take off the faring you will have no headlight and no front turn signals. (ANd 1100G headlight mounting will not fit)
If take off the bags, then you have no rear turn signals.

G is shaftdrive
GK is shaftdrive with the factory fairing and bags and trunk (and only few other things that are different from a G)
GKE is an 84 GK.

Good that you are intending to take a MSF class.
Around here all summer worth of classes fill up in the winter before any of them start.
So don't wait to sign up for one.

Seat looks like has suffered some wear.
Stock GK seats in any good condition are hard to find.
Stock 1100G seats (82 and after) will fit, are different, flatter, wider in front, are solid black, but will fit.

I do have a somewhat decent GK stock seat, cover is great, stuffing is great, but the pan is rusted out to where the brackets in front have pulled out of the pan. Is for early 82 GK, so is solid black. Let me know if your pan is good, and you would be interested in this one I have.

Dave

Welcome to the forum. I'm new here as well but not a new rider. My youngest son, the only one in the family to do so, took the MSF course. As a result he is a much better rider than I or his two brothers. I've been riding since the mid 60's and I can only attribute his skill to the MSF course. When he rides it is pure poetry in motion. I swear he could turn a motorcycle around on the kitchen table!

Redman...good eyes on the lowers. The PO was changing plugs when I went to look at the bike and had them taken off. The mirrors however are AWOL.
I hear what you are saying about the fairing and bags...no lights. I don't have a firm plan, but was thinking about a universal bracket for the front, and fabbing something for the rear. I have to see what it looks like when it is put back together.

1984man...yep, I have been lurking for a couple of weeks and have seen bikecliff's stuff...all excellent info.

jdvorchak...welcome to you too! Good to hear the kudos on the MSC. In Connecticut it's mandatory for your motorcycle license. They have three different levels of courses: The Basic course for your lcense, then two advanced courses for defensive driving and 'cager' avoidance. It's all about having a plan to get out of trouble when it comes around.

dorkburger and alke46...thanks for the welcome. Hope to see you all on the forums.
