If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Petcock Stainless Steel Screws

I am tryhing to replace my original screws that hold the fuel petcock on with stainless steel allen head screws. I have a nice new petcock and would like to go with SS 6mm screws but since filling my tank with fuel i am getting a slow drip from around the screw head. I have SS washer fitted for a 6mm screw that uses a 5mm allen wrench.

Do I need a flange head screw for more distributed pressure to create a better seal? I would like to stay SS Allen head if possible.

Thanks!

try some thread sealer or PTFE tape on the threads, any petrol resistant sealer will work

You have to apply fuel resistant sealer around the threads of the screws. Ted

i replaced the washer with a new SS washer, no internal rubber ring on the washer. I have the original washers but i think they too do not have a rubber ring.

I was thinking about finding any washer with an internal rubber ring. I will ook to see what i find at the hardware store for washers.

The kind of washer you are looking for is a sealing washer.

They look like this..

Just use a 1/4" nylon washer from any hardware store.

It's worked on my bike for ten years or so...

i'm a little skeptical b/c the fuel is coming from the allen head but i suppose if the washer is a tight fit to the head and the shaft of the screw then it could work. I'll try the sealing washer and the nylon washer.

Thanks for the suggestions!

i just bought 2 neoprene washers with an inside diameter of 3/16" and kind of threaded it onto the stainless steel 6mm screw with a SS washer. The i.d. was a bit smaller than the 6mm screw shaft. Applied some thread sealant and tightened down the 2 screws. Filled the tank with fuel and after an hour no leaks around the allen head. Had to be careful how much i torqued down the screw b/c the pressure from the allen head and washer was squishing the neoprene washer. I could have gone tighter but didn't. Will monitor my work to see if this will hold up.

Thanks for the tips!
