shocks on ebay

I do not know these brand of shocks but I have heard you get what you pay for. I'm pretty sure it would be a waste of your money. Start hunting around on ebay for a used set of progressive's or something else. You might be able to get a used set of Hagons for $200.

Difficult to recommend unbranded shocks on eBay. We have even seen scooter shocks trying to pass themselves off as motorcycle shocks because of their style.
I'd go for known brands, myself, but that may just be me.

Those look like MDI shocks. They are reputed to be very stiff for solo riding.I picked up a used set from a local GSR member for my 78 1000 because it's going to mainly be a 2 up bike.Figure they might be good for that.
Edit:The bushings that come with them are NFG,the PO of mine put in a good set.

Yeah, those are the infamous MDI shocks. The plastic bushings don't last. You have to salvage the metal ones out of whatever you're replacing.

Definitely overdamped. They might be OK on the back of an 800 lb bike, but they are quite harsh on my 1000G with GK luggage. I definitely recommend spending another hundred to get something decent.

when you guys say these are over dampened, would they be better for say a heavier rider?

sounds like I am not eating enough cheese burgers for these shocks.

Those shocks look suspiciously like OXON fitted to my machine. One up is interesting but two up she settles down a lot. The bushes are very poor quality.

MDI or EMGO name, seem to be the same inexpensive shocks that you can search Ebay and find for $80-100 depending on type(clevis or eyelet), length and seller. I bought a set for a '83 GS1100G I owned a few years ago to replace the leaking fluid air shocks put on by the PO, and like others say, not a very good ride. If your existing shocks are leaking then maybe, but 34 year old stock shocks usually give a more comfortable ride than these as long as they aren't leaking. Save your $ and wait for a more useful set that may cost $100+ more if your intent on a good replacement and keeping the bike. I wouldn't buy them again.

Here is a link for similiar shocks searching under EMGO...

I would rather buy lightly used good shocks on ebay than the new ones that you mentioned. I bought a Works rear shock for an ex500, with remote res. for $90, for example. It was like new and I saved $$$.

You can buy some quality new shocks for under $300.

ok I think that I will keep the 34 year old original shocks . They aren`t leaking yet.

Better yet do this:

It's nice having a motorcycle that rides well, sticks to the road, and tracks and handles well.
Your 34 year old ones can't come close to a modern pair of quality shocks, even when they were new.

When I saw this I really liked the idea. :D A quick ebay search found this among others:

I'd like to know more about how and what is involved in converting to an ex500 rear shock on my '81 1100e. Do we use just one? They look as though they mount the same way our oem shocks do.

Mike, that is for a monoshock or single shock suspension. Your bike has 2 shocks.
Nice try, though.
BTW, the way it connects is called eye and clevis. It is pretty obvious which end is the eye. The other end is the clevis.

Yeah, I know... What threw me off was gsgeezer's post about getting the ex500 shock. So then I guess without other modifications, that's out. Are there GS's that use a monoshock rear end? I guess to get me through the season I'll swap my leaky shocks out for a pair of good used stock units.
