1982 Gs850g Pricing Info

Hello all,

I have a question with regards to an 82 gs850g. I am possibly thinking about a bigger bike and a local person has this for sale near me.

The bike runs but the carbs need cleaning.
There is a cam cover gasket leak (small)
Needs new tires
smokes at startup from one side
He has not done anything like valves or carbs

From what he says the bike is in very good condtion cosmetically (I will try and see it tommorow) with the exception of peeling clearcoat in a couple of places.

He is at $1700.00 firm :shock:

I would like opinions on that price. I have an idea of what I want to pay but i would like to hear your thoughts.

Honestly, and others may have other opinions, that seems high to me. A "good" deal on a running 850 that only needed minor repairs would be about $1000. For almost $2000 I'd expect it to be able to get on after an oil change and go on a 500 mile trip.

Even though it might be near-perfect cosmetically, the fact that it needs carb work, the valves adjusted and two tires (how are the brakes?), really brings the price down.

If it runs well enough to ride it home, it might be worth $1000-1200, but I wouldn't go much higher.

I got my 850 that had 21K on it for $1000 last summer. It was probably in the same condition that yours maybe in. But as Steve brings a very good point about the valves and what else internally could need replacing because of the smoke that you say. Think about the basics that need to be replaced to get her reliable ya know?

I got my 850GL from a Honda/Harley dealer a year and a half ago for $980 at the end of the season. After charging the battery and checking fluids, i rode it home 350 miles, it is in good-excelent cosmetic and was running. Granted I got a good deal, i think $1700 for something that smokes runs rough and leaks is a bit on the high side.

$1,700 is way too high. For the issues he cites (and there are assuredly others as well), $900, tops.

Figure you're going to have to spend at least another $300, maybe as much as $500 to truly make it roadworthy, and set your max price accordingly.

I concur with the others, that's too much money. Click the thumbnail in my sig to meet "Jessie". I paid $1500 for her with 13,800 miles. Mechanically: "push the button and ride" condition (ran great). Cosmetically: just a little dirty and a couple of scratches on the front fender. But it's springtime now and the sellers are charging whatever the market will bear. I would consider very carefully before spending that much money on a bike with those known problems.
